What did you do in the garden today?

Woooohoooo!

More garden cleanup and tilling . Rain tonight .Saw some white Magnolia blooms opening today . Lilac buds are swelling . Pear buds enlarging . Got to 79 today . Planted some raspberries . All 3 colors red , yellow and black . More plants coming in the mail soon .

Winter is still a foot deep here. Do see a few pockets of clearing: the driveway and over the septic tank. ANd around a lawn chair left out over the winter. Definitely a good April FOols joke.

Harvesting a pound of asparagus every day, eating the last of the kale and chard, found a few carrots too. This morning I cut all the early flowers off the strawberries and started a new bed with the 100 best runners. Sprayed the necterines. Both trees have wilt (again). Trying seaweed spay, but it's raining and 42 degrees so will need to resorts. We got three bare root table grapes, I just toed them in because it is too cold to plant them. Lots of seeds on the warmer, lots of starts under the light...

We got a 8x12 solexx greenhouse on Sunday, can't wait to put it together!

Your blueberry looks like it has frost (or fertilizer) burn. Is it a new plant? Is your soil acid enough?

Your seed asparagus is about right for early April. Mature asparagus will start to fern if it's not picked promptly. Seed asparagus ferns a day or two after it sprouts. The sooner it ferns the sooner it will start on root growth.

Hey everyone, I have a question. In order to clear out room for our garden, we had to remove several oak trees. We're debating on a good spot to burn them, and honestly right in the middle of the garden area looks like the best spot just because it's mostly sandy, we removed all of the brush, and it has no overhanging trees.

Would it harm the soil at all (pfft, who am I kidding. What soil? It's mostly sand like all of Florida.) to burn off the trees in this spot? We aren't going to be putting the plants in the ground for few weeks, but I don't want to damage the soil to the point where we can't grow anything. The spot where we are thinking of burning is mostly going to be melons, two types of watermelon, honeydew, cantelope, and crenshaw, and later pumpkins, both Cinderella and Sugar. I know wood ash is sometimes a good soil additive, I'm just hesitant to burn anything on the spot where we need to plant things in a few weeks.

Just check the ph and adjust as needed. It takes 10 pounds of wood ash to raise the ph of a 4x6 garden bed by 1/10 of a point.

Yeah. We purposely burn our old garden stuff and branches in the fall on top of the garden and then mix the ash in the soil. The native americans used to set the prairie on fire so that the grass would grow better for grazing.

The blueberry looks like it has nitrogen burn to me. Too much fertilizer or raw compost?? But blueberries are my nemesis so I could be totally off.

I've never had asparagus bud that quickly before. Are you in a drought situation or having exceptionally hot days?? That can throw off a plants cycles.
