What did you do in the garden today?

The "onliest" thing I did in my so-called garden, which is also my chicken run, was take pictures of the lily jungle. We sorta inherited these a couple years back from an old feller and they have just gone nuts. The chickens cultivate around them digging for bugs and seeking coolness and shade, and of course they fertilize them as well! At the time, we didn't know lilies are toxic to chickens but apparently the chickens know that, so no worries. Here are just a few of my favorites. Notice how some have contrasting throats, and some have ruffled edges. Our friend the late Bob Trial spent a lifetime breeding these.

One of my hens has gone missing. No one is acting like a predator was around. I was out mowing, so I don't think she was snatched. She's my lone wanderer. If I had to guess she followed her stomach into the hay field or the cattle pasture and can't see her way home. Closer to dark I'll go call for her and see if she figures it out.
I wonder if she's hiding while she sits on a clutch of eggs somewhere off the beaten path?

@WthrLady THANK YOU!! I'm printing out your drawings to take with me, we're headed out the door for the weekend. I can't thank you enough for taking the time.

Anyway, will catch up when we get to camp but wanted to share this pic my neighbor took yesterday, its looking at the house directly across the street from me. Not 1 bear, but TWO!! We parked the truck in front of the coop & my neighbors will collect eggs & keep their eyes out for my girls but I will worry all weekend.

Good morning gardeners. The monsoon is over for now. We got a lot of much needed rain, but we get to dry out a bit today. I picked a handful of peas this morning. Planted some dill in the butternut squash and cabbage bed. I noticed the little striped squash bugs on the zucchini plant so I offered them some rosemary bits. Wow, did they scram out of there. I put a cut up onion in with the cabbage to hopefully deter the chipmunks. I added some rosemary as well. The gardens have been loving all the rain but I think a sunny day will do them good. My tomato plants seemed to have doubled in size since the rain started and most are now developing flowers. I hope your mother's health improves soon @karenerwin. Perhaps the emotional distress of the move is wearing on her. Love all the pictures. Daylilies are one of my favorites. OMG! Bears oh my @Sueby. Scary, scary. I hope they just mosey on out of there soon. The most exciting happening around here is that littles figured out how to take their crumble feeder apart. That's about all the excitement I can handle for now. Have a great day everyone.

@Sueby You're welcome. Let me know if any of it's confusing. The two uphill ground level drains are important as are the upper bed drains. It might be easier in the upper beds to use a T and and L.

I really enjoy my irrigation set ups. I always seemed to get around to doing them on the hottest day of the year. But now they're done all over the ranch.

Too hot for outside work today. I could even only manage 30 minutes after sunset last night pulling weeds from the flowerbeds. So hot and humid it is literally nauseating.

Sewing maybe, grocery maybe.

Too high a chance today and tomorrow night to cut hay.

Chicks have hatched.

First one out.

All Mixed breeds (although a possibility that there are some full blood GLW.

Less successful hatch - I did not turn as often was last hatch, 2-3x per day rather than a solid 3x per day, so clearly that may have impacted it.

there are 3 pipped and partially zipped chicks that appear to have died. They got rolled around by their hatch mates and appears that the pip/zip was rolled to the bottom, so maybe they couldn't breath? But there is grippy self liner down, and it is the thin type with all kinds of openings, holes as you can see in incubator pic. They aren't shrink wrapped either (It doesn't appear), so I am not sure why they did not hatch, but they are not moving at all :(
