What did you do in the garden today?

winds howled to 45 mph all day yesterday. Working outside was downright miserable with the harvest dust, dirt dust, and smoke. I managed to finish refurbishing a Perfection kerosene heater to a LED fire lamp. It looks amazing.
When the front passed we hit 51 mph, which isn't unusual up here. By the time traveled down the valley to the city 30 minutes later, it was howling through the city at 76 mph. It ate a LOT of trees.

I did have to chase a loose calf this morning. NO idea HOW he got over the fence. So I'm going with he BLEW over.

Dog and I are going into the city. She needs a bath and a car ride. LOL.
Have a great day all.

Today is a slow day. I will go out later and work on pulling weeds in the side garden and raking the prayer garden- grrrr magnolia leaves. My azaleas decided to bloom again beside the front steps- they are so pretty. I need to to some moving around in the spring. Two of the hydrangeas I had in the back of the front beds did not do well, so will move them in the spring to the back yard garden where their sister hydrangea is three feet tall and looking great. Also gonna move the turks cap off the side fence to the other side of the yard. Apparently, it doesn't like the direct afternoon sun.
I have been contemplating perserving some fruit. Trying to decide if I want fig, apple, pear or peach. May do more than one kind. I have the jars and lids, just need the fruit. Hmmm.

I was supposed to get an Amish built utility shed delivered today.
Pics please once they do deliver it, I've looked at those with covetous eyes. Too far to ship one here unless I win the lottery. :) The place I was looking at also does beautiful coops, ah the luxury.

Here's the winter brassica bed and the garlic and shallot bed.

There are a few green onions growing on the left, they never did much over the summer so I'll leave them for now and see what they do. The garlic is coming up already but from what I've read, that shouldn't be a problem. :fl

I keep picking cherry tomatoes but the bushes look pretty sad at this point. I really want to rip them out to plant more garlic and shallots and clean up the asparagus bed. Plus I know there are more leeks hiding under a huge mass of tomato vines, I've promised to make potato leek soup and I'd like to know if I can make a big batch or not. I'll end up planting garlic and shallots in nearly all the beds, I figure I can harvest them early if need be to make room for the next spring's planting. That's better than letting them go to waste. Or I can just use them in cooking. :)

Made a shopping run and got a lot of butter and green onions (I could never grow enough green onions to keep up with how many we eat)so I need to clean and cut up the green onions, and make some clarified butter and ghee. I learned to clarify the butter for the hassenpfeffer (it was the best rabbit we've had so far) and the ghee is supposed to be great for cooking as well. You can freeze it or can it too for that matter and it keeps for a long time.

Seed Question:

Normally in Aug/Sept seed supplies are low, due to end of season and new batches not yet ready to sell. So, in looking for seeds many are currently out of stock - it seems more than usual. However, I think just more gardens went in this year, so more seeds bought.

Am I being optimistic to expect seed supplies should be back up in another month or two as this year's seed crops are harvested, dried, processed, and packaged?
I am one of those who is buying seeds online who previously did not. I am guessing that seed producers are going to produce more seeds this year to reach increased demand because I am guessing people who gardened this year are going to keep gardening even if food supply issues are cleared up because your own food always tastes better.

In the event that a seed shortage does happen I figure its best to buy up the seeds available that you intend to plant and even switch to new varieties that are available now just to be on the safe side. I am also saving seeds now not just for myself but to share with anyone who for some reason might not be able to get seeds over winter and into spring.

The garden shop guy I talk to and sell landscaping plants to told me that he would definitely have seeds for sale in spring which is a vote of confidence towards the seed supply being there for us but people are known to be overly optimistic so best to be prepared.

Hello, hope everyone is doing well! Just wanted to pop in and say hello. Nothing awry here, just busy (also: allergies this year! Agh!).

Thought we'd get an early frost this year, but here we are, the day after the average first frost date and it was 78 this afternoon. So the garden plugs (slowly, it being October and all) on. Anyone get frost yet?

Happy gardening/prepping for winter! Among other things I have been tossing some of the fallen leaves onto our flowerbeds. Hoping for a payoff next year. ;)

no frost yet! Possibly this coming Saturday morning. I’ve got beets, peas, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, mustard greens, radish and turnips, carrots growing/ready to pick.
