What did you do in the garden today?

DP and I both got our flu shots on the last day of September, she didn't even feel hers and wasn't sore at all afterward. Mine pinched when I was stuck and my arm was sore for a couple of days. We've both had the shots for pneumonia and shingles and always get our flu shots. I'm nearly always a little sore for a few days but well worth it. DP is prone to nasty lung infections so we take no chances. And since I haven't worked at a regular job for a year, we've had no colds since then.

Looks like Frost might hit for the first time early Saturday morning! We had a night or two in the upper 30's, but no frost yet. After Saturday night, no more low 30's for at least 5 days afterwards predicted.

So, I have the last of the dry beans to pick - they are not completely dry yet, so will wait until later in the week to pick.

Beets and turnips are looking good. I think they can handle a light frost, so not worried. One of the turnips is called "Silky Sweet" - they are sweet, and easy to eat fresh, however, the texture is fairly soft, which must be what the "silky" part of the name comes from. Not a favorite turnip due to the texture. The other turnip we have planted is another smaller white type, but it has a more firm texture to it.

Peas are growing, but the frost might kill them....They are in raised beds and get sun nearly the entire time of daylight, so I'm hopeful they will do OK. The cabbage and brussel sprouts are not impressing me . seem to be growing so very slowly - I planted them mid-July, and nothing to show for it yet. not even tiny brussels yet...not even small heads of cabbage. The packages indicate growth times less than 90 days, so I'm surprised there isn't better growth.

Two more beds to clean out...only carrots left in those beds, so might leave them in the ground for now, but need to pull the tomato and pepper stalks and roots out of those beds.

Seed Question:

Normally in Aug/Sept seed supplies are low, due to end of season and new batches not yet ready to sell. So, in looking for seeds many are currently out of stock - it seems more than usual. However, I think just more gardens went in this year, so more seeds bought.

Am I being optimistic to expect seed supplies should be back up in another month or two as this year's seed crops are harvested, dried, processed, and packaged?

If you leave the carrots they’ll give you seed next year.

I think it depends on how successful people were with their gardens this year and how determined they are to keep gardening next year. I would keep an eye out for the seeds you want and buy as soon as they are available or look somewhere other than your usual supply and buy early if you can. Maybe buy extra if you buy early to make up for the drop in germination rate if the seeds were for this year.

Goog morning gardeners. I ended up transplanting one of the fairy dusters into the ground yesterday and put a Mexican poppy between it and the bird of paradise. There’s an elephant ear on the other side of that and then I’ll put in a Mexican heather to help shade the ground. I have Mexican poppies on the other side of the duster and may put in some bulbs for color, the poppies are white. The herbs line the east and south side of the shade garden but they get plenty of sun except in the summer which they don’t need. I heard on the news this morning we’re going back up to the low 100s for a few more days and will break the record for the most number of 100+ degree days in a year, we’ll be at 145 days by the end of this week. Hopefully that’ll be it!

Good morning gardeners. Nothing happening in my garden. We are forecasted to get rain late overnight into tomorrow so I will be putting grass seed down in the dip in my front yard I filled in. I almost caved into the hype of buying seeds for next year last month, but I'm not sure where and what I'll be planting so it didn't seem to be smart to order something I may not use. I have asparagus in one of the garden beds. So I know I'll get something from that in the very least. I will be looking into trying to find a more blight resistant Roma tomato variety. I may go with an all bush variety of green beans. The one 8 foot row I had this year was a really good producer for a longer period of time than the pole beans and this could free up some space to plant lima beans which I really like but hate the canned limas from the store. But I have this winter to research and develop my garden plan. Have a great day everyone.

We're getting YOUR rain right now. Hoping to send it your direction as soon as is possible.
