What did you do in the garden today?

Not much going on today will probably take pictures for the Christmas cards. I was planning on spreading manure today and finishing mulching the perennial bed but that will have to be put until Friday between the rain and the fact that I seem to have nasty sinus infection going on. Since I’m stuck inside I’ll go ahead and make the cinnamon for the cinnamon hard candy I’m making later this week.

The onions are questionable. I didn't have the best results this year. We planted a variety of red onion bulbs, and they grew but didn't get very large. They are the size of a nice shallot. Anybody have a favorite onion variety to grow and tips to grow them large?
I prefer LongDay Onions, I use more white than yellow, but for yellow I like Copra. The whites I don't remember what they were, whatever the feed store had.

Mounding and fertilizing timing is important, at least here with onions.

Oh yea, I forgot to comment on the onions! I grew Spanish onions, they are my favorite as they are a little sweeter & more delicate I find. I had no issues growing them, they grew well here. They didn't get as giant as the grocery store ones, but I find that with a lot of things I grow since our growing season is a little short & starts a little later sometimes but they were the size of, say, an apple. They sure did help with keeping the bugs away! I plan on planting them around the outside of every bed this spring. :gig

I haven't grown any onions, but around here, everyone cries for Vidalia onions.

A bit of snow this morning, it melted through out the day though. When my blow up Christmas decorations came on around this evening I was heading out and noticed patches of ice on the fabric. They were blown up fine though. The plus side is my garden and lawn got a bit of nitrogen and moisture today.

I am not a fan of the cold or snow though. Lived my whole life in and around Chicago. I liked snow as a kid because it was fun. I find it downright cold and messy these days. My 4 year old son loves it though and I bet my 1 year old daughter will too this year. We haven't had any snow yet that they could really play in, but that also means I haven't had to snow blow, shovel and salt.
