What did you do in the garden today?

Today I picked enough kale and arugula for the quail and 4 small peppers for myself. I also finished gluing an underground extension to one irrigation line. Now I can finish screwing together a new raised bed AND it will be easier to weed whack in the spring.

I am growing grocery store garlic this year because it was fresher and bigger than the stuff in the nursery. I figure it is mostly California white which ought to grow fine here, all of it has sprouted already.

I don't see garlic anywhere for gardening. I wanted to plant some this winter to have something going on in the garden first thing in the Spring. Anybody have success planting garlic from the grocery store? And tips on preparing it for the garden?

I have been able to buy a garlic put it in water halfway up with light and it will grow putting the stem in tepid water once it sprouts clear it from cats they eat it

Good morning gardeners. I cheated and bought a six pack of broccoli starts yesterday. I’m feeling really unmotivated to get out there and garden this winter! Temps are ok for it, but it’s too cold (for me) and dark before work and after work there’s animals and kids plus dinner to make. I think if I don’t toss out seed then I won’t have to deal with it so I’m putting in the starts when it warms up. I also got a cilantro because the bunnies adore it. They also really liked the dill and parsley I cut for them recently. Then I have to take care because they’re actual plants. I’m still in bed snuggling with the pups, catching up here and watching the news. You know, I wonder how many people in those ridiculous lines for testing will self quarantine after they’ve tested until Christmas when they go hang out with their family? I’m guessing none. Anyway, have a great Saturday all!

Morning all! It's so weird you all talking about gardening when it's 6 degrees with a foot of snow on the ground. :gig

It's too cold to even go check on the birds! Thank goodness for whoever invented heated waterers! I do want to get out & shovel a bit of the littles pen, they could use a bit more room & maybe they'll leave the coop!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Good morning all. It started out at 3F this morning but it just hit 18F a few minutes ago. I've replenished the icy chicken water twice and have at least one more trip before the temps get into the 30's. Despite the super low temps outside, it was near 20F inside the coop earlier. It will be sunny most of the day so that should warm up the chicken's bubble. I got the weekly sales flyer for my favorite discount store and they are advertising garden seeds already. Awesome. I'll see what I can get from them, then order whatever else I need online. My kitchen painting is nearly finished. Just some touch ups. The remainder of the remodel will have to wait until after Christmas. I'm just thrilled not to have to look at that ugly old wallpaper anymore. The kitchen looks bigger, brighter and cleaner. I likely need to replace the element in my oven. I got an oven thermometer and sure enough, the oven temp is like 25 to 30 degrees cooler than what the setting says. If necessary, I will replace the entire unit but I will be staying with electric. The cost of replacing with a gas unit would be over $2000. That's not in my retirement budget. Looking forward to checking out the vegetable seeds soon.

I have seen garlic in seed catalogs before but is EXPENSIVE. As in $10 for 1 or 2 bulbs. I just use the stuff from the grocery store. It is said that it is usually sprayed with a chemical that prohibits them sprouting in the store but I usually do not have a problem. I was experimenting this year and using the 3 varieties and soft neck is grown mostly in cooler climates which might be part of my problem. I also use store bought ginger rhizomes and grow enough ginger in pots to usually last a whole year.
