What did you do in the garden today?

I have seen garlic in seed catalogs before but is EXPENSIVE. As in $10 for 1 or 2 bulbs. I just use the stuff from the grocery store. It is said that it is usually sprayed with a chemical that prohibits them sprouting in the store but I usually do not have a problem. I was experimenting this year and using the 3 varieties and soft neck is grown mostly in cooler climates which might be part of my problem. I also use store bought ginger rhizomes and grow enough ginger in pots to usually last a whole year.

I tried ginger in a pot but late in the spring. 1 of 3 plants already died (helped by my dogs who broke it). I hope they will grow back.

about a month ago I bought curcuma rhizomes and I hope they will start sprouting as ginger did so that I can plant them as well.

Good morning all. Temps are in the low 20's now going up to low 30's today. Today is the first day of the holiday fun DD and I planned. Breakfast was fresh gluten free apple crepes. We are having a light Christmas Tea later then watch the Nutcracker Ballet (on DVD of course). Tuesday is our holiday cocktail party then on Christmas Eve we are making sugar cookie cutouts and having a cookies and red wine party to watch "It's a Wonderful Life." Her holiday party for her job is a zoom party on Wednesday. I'm not sure if the painter is coming back this week or not. Who knows. Right now they are forecasting heavy rain on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Oh well. As long as my basement remains dry, I'm OK with that. My Boston Bibb lettuce seems to be growing. I may have to get another head to add to my indoor "lettuce garden." Winter Solstice is tomorrow so yippee, the days will start getting a little longer soon. Happy Holidays to all.

Coffee in hand, giant vat of this week's oatmeal is in the crockpot, small breakfast batch on the stove, and DH is out feeding the livestock.

The tree is out, I'll put ornaments on it today, my Jul candles haven't come YET in the mail. I should have just bought them locally despite the 3 hour drive. So battery Jul candle it is. I'll make the Jul log and bread today too. I also have some sweet potatoes that need canned before they decide to walk off the counter and make a break for it.

Then that's it, I'm done.

We'll be in the 50s until Wednesday, when the bottom falls out again. But the nights will all be around 5-8 degrees. The birds need to get out and play for a bit while the getting is good, and I SHOULD pull weeds in the garden path, but eh....I don't want to.

@Wee Farmer Sarah, your plans all sound just lovely! Sold a dozen eggs yesterday and gave them some of the wintered over chard as well. I'm considering getting signs to put out next season to sell farm fresh eggs and whatever excess vegetables I have. I'll be growing mostly tomatoes and greens this next season, those seem to do the best here. Added bonus is I can put netting over the greens to keep the cabbage butterflies out, they are still murdering my brassicas. It's been pouring rain here for the last 12 hours or so and is supposed to continue for the rest of the day so I'll be doing a minimum of work outside. The roast for X-mas dinner is thawing in the fridge, I plan to wrap it in cheese cloth to let it dry out a little. Time to get in gear and wrap the presents for under the tree. Not much else going on here. I'll finish with a few pics:

The tiny sharp shin that noticed we have a bird feeder and has come to see what we have for her. :)

Looks like there will be Christmas produce directly from the garden for the upcoming holidays. For central Virginia - that will be a great thing. Normally do not do fall veggies, but this year was a bountiful success. Still spinach, Swiss Chard, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower to harvest - also collards, but I forgot to get a photo of those. Lettuce was available too for today's lunch sandwiches.
