What did you do in the garden today?

Good evening all. We’re prepping for summer here. I took the panels off the coop today and we put up a strip of lattice to provide some cover to hide behind at night. Don’t want moisture building up in there with the heat. Tomorrow I’m moving the pond liner into the small yard where it’ll get more shade in lieu of building a shade structure for it. I need to make a spot in the freezer for making blocks of ice this weekend. So far we’ve reached 99 here and it’s possible we’ll get to 100 this weekend :hitI pulled the parsley and cilantro today, the bunnies and ducks will enjoy them this evening. Everything else is still holding on. The squash is looking really good But it’s still on the small side. I’ll have to water a little more often until everything is done for the season, oh joy. The duck buckets are great for watering shrubs though. I’ve been alternating with gross water one week and clean the next which seems to be working well. Time to get the ducks to bed and feed the bunnies. Have a great weekend all!

are there any vegetables toxic for rabbits? I have been told that carrot leaves are. I did not give them parsley as I was afraid it might be toxic for rabbits.

Onions, and avocado are toxic I am told but carrot tops are great for rabbits and so is parsley. I grow celery too just for the rabbits as the quality I seem to be able to grow isn't very good but the bunnies love the stuff.

Watered and then for frustrated cause something keeps eating my lettuce.... only the lettuce. Lol.

Any leafy green a human can eat a rabbit can. Limit parsley, spinach, canbageand kale, they have oxalates in high amounts. My rabbits love the herbs, but it’s not a daily thing. They like the carrot tops more than carrots. I put a whole broccoli plant in their pen and the leaves were gone but the the part we would consume, the flower, was left and hardly touched. No cabbage, potato, tomato, turnip as I recall. I don’t give my buns lawn clippings but do grow grass for them and rotate the boxes so they can graze.
PS my buns also get a small piece of fruit every day. Apples, bananas, pears, a couple grapes, blueberries. They get it in the morning and come running to the side of their pen and take it right out of my hand. Variety is a good thing!

That's what happening here. People from higher rate states moving here, snatching up homes and property for FAR more than it's worth, and they must have cash because things are selling here for twice what they're worth and the bidding wars are insane. (Wait until they find out how upside down they are and how much it costs to live out here and you just can't HIRE people to pop out and do stuff.)
3 houses in my area worth no MORE than 400,000 sold for 520, 550, and two weeks ago 640,000$. Which OC cranks my value up even higher, and my taxes. (I'm NOT selling.)

THEN last week, people across the road, who bought their 10 acres with a early 60s era house and barn, that needed a LOT of work and all they did was the minimum and the kitchen, paid 320,000 in Dec of 19, they sold it in TWO DAYS for $640,000.

There is SO much work that needs done to this place it's insane. New roof (on house and barn), new bathrooms, new windows and doors, new HVAC, lord only knows what condition the well and septic are in.

And just where are these people moving TO?! Prices are insane everywhere.

Speaking of which, bought 2x4 for greenhouse shelves yesterday. (greenhouse going up today) ONE 2x4x8, untreated, was almost 8$ !!!!!! :he It's not going to keep people from buying things for projects. It's US lumber, US kilns, and US shipping so I do NOT get it.

Several different things going on. Demand is up from so many people starting projects during quarantine. The people who are moving out of cities and building new houses or renovating old ones. The supply is just catching up again as COVID restrictions are lifted. Some industries are taking longer to catch up. I believe the lumber industry just caught up earlier this month. Our town is still low on wood. You couldn’t find wood at all for a while last summer. Gas prices are up meaning shipping costs are up. And lastly there are some companies that are taking advantage of the fact that people are still willing to pay prices. All building supplies seem to up. Around here large prefab commercial buildings were sold out through next April last I checked. Pre COVID you could get one in less than a month!
Well that’s my rant for the day.

I had mentioned a few days ago that I suspected lumber prices are being pushed artificially high... Yesterday DH went to a local distributor that we rarely use because they are so much more expensive than the box stores. The wood was really crappy which is unusual for them. The guy there mentioned that they were having a hard time getting lumber from their normal mills because demand is so high. However he also mentioned that they think prices are being artificially pushed higher. There is a big lumber yard about 20 minutes from my house. All of their outdoor warehouses are stacked full of lumber to the roof and more stacked outside. It is insane to think there is a supply problem....

I'm glad @penny1960 is confident. I am still a little on the fence because no comparison but definitely lean towards a cockerel. Maybe it is just my denial kicking in, maybe I just want more photos of your little cuties :love Yes, it is the later, more photos lol.
We have a very similar teenage flock. So fun. If it makes you feel any better I have 3 cockerels in mine :he. And a blonde Americana that still has me scratching my head and yes, denial, so may be 4 cockerels... With my last 2... 3 Brahma cockerels it has been all about the comb and attitude being my first aha's, then the wattles. The feathers I found deceiving and similar to pullet.View attachment 2279317
Coolest chickens ever. Elvis (in back) and Priscilla @ 16?? weeks. Have fun!!!!
Remember what I said about ghosting you guys for a while.... My school district has remained "in person" this entire school year, so I've been too busy to get an early start on my garden this year. I did get 10 straw bales and I'm about to start conditioning them for another straw bale garden. I have some lovely compost from the one I did last year, so I'll use most of that to grow potatoes in grow bags.

My Brahma turned out to be a girl, so I have 14 young ladies currently hanging out in a temporary dog run while we move the coop. Since my daughter can get in there easily, she has been hanging out with them like they are new friends!

Hope everyone is doing well. Probably not going to catch up on all the posts :)

Lumber pricing.... What we heard last year when the supply went way down was that the mills were closed due to covid. On top of that, people suddenly stuck at home and looking around realized they had a ton of work that needed to be done. It's been good business for handymen! But heck, we couldn't get fence pickets for months!

But! new construction is struggling to get lumber to fuel demand, and it seems like everybody wants an overpriced, cookie-cutter house that sits waaaaay too close to their neighbors. So the demand is up, supply is down, prices of housing are definitely artificially inflated right now, and it is a partial influence in our change of plans to not look for property this winter, but rather wait a bit. We want to see if prices (because land prices went up too) will stabilize in the coming year or two. I would be surprised if they come down, but would be happy to see it happen.

Either way, I'm aching to get back to my roots. Georgia girl, grew up surrounded with green things and town was a once a week deal for groceries. I need something similar back in my life, cause all this dang asphalt and manicured 15x25 lawn patches are depressing.

Strawberry runner is losing the old leaves, but the younger leaves in the center are still green. Fingers crossed.
