What did you do in the garden today?

When flax was grown to make linen, it was planted very thickly, so that the stems would grow straight up, yielding more of the straight fibers, called "line," hence the word linen. Those were spun into fine cloth, "linens." The left over stuff, "tow," was for the lesser quality goods.

A woman back in those days didn't get much say in how life went. But she was the one who spun the fiber and wove the cloth. If her husband was good to her, she would use line flax to make his underwear. If he wasn't, she probably used more tow, which would be less comfortable.

My experience with green beans is that they are easily stunted by cold weather and if they are they never recover well. Other than that we haven’t had any issues with them. I keep forgetting to say something but my mulberry trees came and while they are alive it’s only because mulberries are so tough. They had no packaging around the roots. They were in a completely unsealed plastic bag with no padding and the “This Side Up” sticker was facing the wrong direction! I wish I had taken a picture! They literally threw it in a plastic bag didn’t seal it didn’t wrap the roots and the put it in the box upside down with no paper or bubble wrap stapled the box closed and shipped it!

DW helped me construct a tunnel out of remesh (concrete reinforcement wire mesh) for some of our cucumbers. It's easily 7ft tall and 5ft long. It's going to be neat to see cucumbers hanging from this in a few months.
It's hard to see here because nothing is growing on it yet.

That's exactly how Gurneys shipped my native plum trees. I called and complained and the credited me.

Wheeee-oooo. I got my second Moderna shot, slapped two coats on the coop addition, and dug out another 20 feet of grass along the garden fence. My arm is just starting to feel a little bit sore now. I did the other one this time, to be fair to both arms.

Supposedly gonna get rain tomorrow and/or Friday. We'll see. I want to plant my potatoes and onions. I haven't opened the bag of onions from Gurney's, but I can see at least a few that are no good. :rant

Transplanted more tomatoes than I care to admit I own. Hopefully many of them will be reserved on Friday. I only need 50 for my own garden. I have 3 sizes to sell; 6,4, or singles all $2 each. I think that's a deal as they are hearty and deep root plants. The singles are up-potted 4 times to get them that size.

Cold damp and wanting to rain today.

The number of beans that germinated should be an embarrassment to the Burpee company. Only about 25% and that's inside in the warm. The world's easiest thing to grow, a bean, and 25%. Geesh.

We are going to continue to wear masks social distance and use hand sanitizer.
i got orange, pink and purplish colors. A friend gave me a beautiful salmon color too! I put them in pots today and got them situated in the gazebo. I felt pretty good today, noticed my energy and strength is a little less then usual so I worked half day in the garden and then went to the studio to finish a painting I am working on. I’m Iiking how it’s coming along , it’s almost there, just needs a little more work to be done in the foreground. Here it is so far. I love painting Bison. View attachment 2650120
That is amazing! :love:love:love

I have a lot to catch up on but I just wanted to say that some little critter is going to meet it's demise very shortly - something tore up my garden, dug up all the dill & parsley, half my onions, half of my pole beans & some of my bush beans. It went through the garlic too, but that's big enough that it was fine. It was a busy critter, I saw the holes all around down by the coop, then when I went into the garden I almost lost my mind. Looks like it was digging for grubs or worms, it didn't eat any of the garden stuff it dug up, it just tore it up & left it to die.

I'm going to set up the have a heart trap in the garden & then shoot whatever I catch. :gig :gig :gig I'm so mad. But man I hope it's not a skunk! I don't know how to dispatch that one without getting sprayed. :idunno
