What did you do in the garden today?

I'm on a business trip this week. Won't be home until next Tuesday. It's killing me with curiosity on how my garden survived the storms last night at home... I put down a TON of fresh pine mulch on top of those feed bags to block the sun enough to kill the weeds underneath the bags. I'm hoping that the wind & rain didn't wash anything away.

I also noticed that some of my blueberries were looking a touch chlorotic so I quickly tossed in some blueberry fertilizer right before I headed to the airport.

Can you take a picture and post it? I'm curious about what size the plants are.... I saw a video on Pinterest that pomegranates are ridiculously easy to grow from seeds. I waited patiently for some to show up in the store and harvested a bunch from one fruit. Sure enough, I got around 6 - 8 to germinate from about 10 seeds that I tried. I started them in Solo cups. Just graduated one to raised bed. It is easily 6 inches tall already.

I'm curious how that might compare to what you received from Gurneys.

Interestingly enough, I did the same thing with lemon seeds from store bought lemons.
Here's some pics. I already transplanted them. The pots are 11" in diameter for reference. The meyer lemon has no foliage at all. The stem is green though. Seems like a plant coming out of dormancy. The pomegranate last some leaves in shipping, but still has plenty of foliage and seems healthy.

I love my lawn sweeper. I use it to collect lawn clippings for the garden. (no trees to speak of really.) The orchard leaves simply blow away.
Yes, I'd love to gather up the grass clippings too! Right now, I don't get any of that stuff. :( My compost consists of whatever stray, hay, pine shavings, and poo I gather from cleaning horse stalls, goat house, and duck & chicken coops. I do occasionally toss in compostable material from my kitchen (vegetable scraps, egg shells, and coffee grinds mostly). And then whatever leaves happen to blow themselves into the compost pile. Usually my chickens clean out the egg shells and other good stuff within the hour when/if I let them out to free range. The compost pile is the first place they go.

For a “normal” pot 4” is 4”, deep and diameter. What shape was your pot?
It was like a large starter cell. About 2"x2" and 4" deep. I was expecting 4" wide and 4" deep. The other was even smaller. It might have been just 3" deep and just as narrow. I guess it doesn't much matter since they are tree saplings and the roots are growing downward at this stage more so than outward. It's just annoying to read "4" potted plant" and then receive something so tiny.

We always find the morels around ash and elm trees. Sometimes under cottonwoods by a creek. The ash borer has taken out a lot of trees and it's supposedly affected morels too....

And I had the plum that's dying. I pruned it WAY back at many suggested and in the process found this....

Do you see that canker right at the fork of the tree? When you push on it, it's very spongy. I didn't see it earlier because it is on the back side of the tree. I'm pretty certain that's what is killing the tree.

Still no idea what to do to save it and no time to figure it out. I leave for Minnesota on Sunday for a business trip. It'll probably be dead by the time I return. 😟
I think I would try to prune it back below that spot. I realize that this is coming too late because it is past the time when you left for Minnesota. Let us know how it is doing when you get back.

We are going to continue to wear masks social distance and use hand sanitizer.
i got orange, pink and purplish colors. A friend gave me a beautiful salmon color too! I put them in pots today and got them situated in the gazebo. I felt pretty good today, noticed my energy and strength is a little less then usual so I worked half day in the garden and then went to the studio to finish a painting I am working on. I’m Iiking how it’s coming along , it’s almost there, just needs a little more work to be done in the foreground. Here it is so far. I love painting Bison. View attachment 2650120
Love the painting

How goes things ?
Busy. We are in Poplar Bluff (again). Tuesday & Wednesday. The siding on the house is finally finished!! Hopefully they will finished the soffit and facia on Wednesday. Then waiting on the electrician (hopefully coming after Mother's Day). Then we can get going on the drywall. In the meantime we are finishing up re-wiring the whole house, building stairs to the basement, replacing a rotted beam in the porch ceiling, framing out the downstairs bathroom...

In the garden at home my potatoes are coming up! I still need to get more compost & dirt to refill the raised bed so that I can get it planted. Did cut up a tall redbud tree that got knocked over (split about 4 feet off the ground) and burned it all up.
I have 1 barred rock that is broody. We will see how she does. In the past BR's have not proven themselves to be very good at hatching out & rearing chicks.
