What did you do in the garden today?

Nice day today!

finally prepped/seeded the herb pots for the deck.

also turned the middle compost pile and inoculated it with “compost microorganisms” - which is just “compost starter” that’s sold in the big box store. This middle pile is looking good- not done yet, but looks like it’s coming along well!

The Russet Burbank’s were hilled again. Might be the last time as I’m running short on dirt.

many of the seeds that were direct seeded are coming up. Even the one gourd type (“Corsican”) has two seedlings! Last year only one sprouted, but never grew. The starter pots -under light and kept warm to hot with all the other gourds- but not a single Corsican sprout. These were the last three Corsican seeds in the packet, and two grew when direct seeded into dirt!

we are supposed to get rained on all day tomorrow, so no garden work expected.

@vall -glad you are feeling better!

Apricots are ripe, I only had 8 of them this year. Not quite as good as last year but still better than the store.
Mmm...home grown apricots right off the tree are amazingly good, so much better than from the store.

we planted two apricot trees a few weeks ago. They are looking healthy so far. Maybe we will get some good apricots in a few years!

Weeded, watered, and fertilized. I also thinned out the lettuce finally. I need to hill potatoes, but didn't feel up to it. I pruned the tomatoes. I still need to weed a bit more, but the garden is getting back in order since it went a bit wild while we were gone last week.

I also put the pellet gun to use again. Another rabbit bites the dust. The garden is well secured from rabbits now, but if they dig they'll get in since I'm not wanting to burry wire all around. The pellet gun and live trap should take care of the occasional rabbit who does get in.

Managed to get another plant in the ground. I can only dig about one hole in the morning and another in the afternoon before I'm done in. Blegh. But they keep multiplying!

I managed to get to a somewhat hard to access nursery (parking is horrible) and found white jasmine, a red butterfly bush (new to me, very pretty), and a seedless grape vine. We've got an ugly fence to grow the vining plants on, and that's what I'm working on at the moment. Thinking of planting the jasmine right along the fence upwind of our bedroom window. When the weather allows, we can crack the windows at night. Should be lovely.

Still trying to get the lot planned out on graph paper. Once that's done, I'll turn DH loose on it with some guidance. Additionally, I still have blackberries I need to get in the ground, and broke down and ordered raspberries. My intent is to baby them and keep them out of the worst of the heat by starting them in pots partially indoors until they have robust growth. More work for me yes... but might mean fruit next year rather than later. Fingers crossed.

Also debating whether I want to bother with asparagus here or not. I'll keep humming and hawing for a bit and discuss it with DH.

two of the 4 that blew me off yesterday asked if they could come today...sure why not...

Came across this great LOC photo today.
Woman with her new FSA pressure canner. The FSA went around rural america in the late 30s and 40s training people how to use the safer pressure canner to put up food.View attachment 2696537

My great grandparents ran a fruit farm during the 20s and 30s. Their house is still standing and has a root cellar below it. There is STILL food that they canned from the 30s and 40s down there.... 😂

:rantS-L-U-G-S- :barniethey eat everything-- I have noticed we dont have as many frogs this year, it may be early, I have only seen 1. I am not hearing them either. I have seen way more slugs than usual. I had to pull them off the Black Cohosh, the Bergamont, lettuce, the Echinacea,,, and more. I have been using diatomaceous, it does help,:he but HOLY COW! I need more frogs.

First I let the chicks have full run of the coop and run for about 30 min. then I put them in the coop with the door shut-
then
I planted the tomatoes, I grew from seed

I re-started jalapeno seed, I planted the Boneset, and a potted rosemary that needed to be in a bed, I put soil & chickens poo around the potatoes, closed any gaps in the chicken wire over the coop run, those hawks are tricky,

Today must go get some slug-Go,
then I need to thin the second seeding of turnips, plant more beet and kale seed,

Okay to hell with suirrels they eat the garden also .. Yes I put beer out for slugs in little saucers only way to stop the munchers :barnie:idunno only thing worse than slugs is Ducks they smell and make a mess :lau
Gasp! How can you say such a thing Penny? I have to go cover the ducks ears so they don’t hear you say that!
