What did you do in the garden today?

pre-grown corn that you could just plant

Never heard of that. I just planted a 4x4 raised bed of corn seeds in a square foot gardening spacing. First time for corn for me. Read that it was better to grow a section of corn rather than one long row. Something to do with better pollination.

Nope, never germinated. And the seeds are from this year. Can I do lettuce, spinach, and carrots in pots? Might try that
Yes, but if you try carrots in pots get a shorter variety, like Danvers half-long or similar. Butpee labels some seeds with a “container-friendly” notation on the back. The other issue with pots is that they can dry out pretty fast, so keeping them moist can be a struggle depending on your climate/ where you placed the pots.

I have several batches of fire ants in my raised blueberry beds. I destroy the nests every chance I get with perverse glee but they just rebuild them. I do have some fire ant killer and some DE but I keep forgetting to trek it out to the garden. Plus its done nothing but rain for a month.
I hear ya. I try to note ant beds when I mow- then go kill em.

Yes, corn is an air pollinator. Meaning, when the wind blows, it pollinates the corn. If you plant in one long row, it won't get pollinated. But if you plant like you did, in a square, then it gets pollinated better. Good luck on the corn! I did it last year and enjoyed it

Overcome that problem using wicking pots. Here is a good YouTube video of how to make your own wicking pots/tubs. Especially good for places that have little rainfall.

I start all mine in peat pots in the greenhouse and plant them outside when they are 6 inches tall.

As @tripletfeb said, plant corn in blocks for better pollination.

I was talking with a coworker about planting corn and mentioned this, telling her corn was wind pollinated, and a row, or a corn plant here and there wasn't going to get pollinated. She looked thoughtful for a moment, and then said, "Oh. I thought they were more social than that."
