What did you do in the garden today?

Yes... you forgot to mail me some of your asparagus

Topped off all the hail damage from the storms ... squash, tomatoes, cabbages, asparagus, and blueberries all hit pretty hard. Thankful it wasn't worse for us. Oklahoma is typically a friendly state, just not weatherwise in May. Said a few prayers ... cried a few tears

Glad you're safe. Can always plant more gardens. Much love from down South. Hope your loved ones are safe too.

A terrible thing to happen. I hope that recovery from the physical damage is swift and that the bereaved and injured get the support and comfort they need.

Weeded and hoed the whole veggie garden today. Got some slow release fertilizers and am hoping that is what the sugar snap peas need. They were doing excellent and within the last two days they have started to go off. Yellow leaves at the base of the vines and gradually dying... Dad suggested nitrogen deficiency so going to try that. Lettuce almost ready and tomatoes will be producing soon so we got the cages put on for support :) Going to plant the Tequila Sunrise peppers tonight once the garden isn't in direct sun.

Typically Memorial Day weekend is our area's time to plant, but with the weather being cold and having frost warnings, it's a no go. Going to wait until next week when it isn't 32 degrees at night *blech*

CyndiChick--I started some Tequila Sunrise peppers too! Yay!

Yay! We love hot peppers so we have kung pao, tequila sunrise, and a hot salsa mix which has about 6 hot varieties (Anch, Anaheim Chili and a couple others). They are doing great but the Tequila Sunrise seems to grow a bit slower than the others. We also have a sweet pepper mix so we'll have a nice color mix. :)

I built two square box planters for my picnic table top garden. I'm going to build one more box so I can cover the whole top. They are two foot by two foot and seven inches deep on the inside. I'm going to plant spinach and maybe oregano. I've potted some bell pepper plants to set on the seats.

I'm renting so I want to leave a small footprint and not dig up the yard too much and utilize space on the porches, etc.

Yellow leaves often indicate that as does over watering tho, careful adding to much nitrogen, peas naturally put out excess. I have found if I harvest peas constantly the plants last longer. But as soon as one pod goes past the point of eating and goes to seed the plant starts to die. But I have only had this issue with snap peas this season so far. I added 2 tablespoons of molasses to a pitcher if water...waited to water so the peas were thirsty and would give them the molasses watering evey other week. Seemed to really extend my harvest.
Is it only yellowing from the bottom up? If so it is a sign of N diff, your Dads right and they will appreciate the ferts to munch on :)
I believe overwater yellow is from the top down or all over. Are the leaves striped? If so, could be a Mag def too. I came across a Mag deficiency last year (lost the plant before I had the answer-easy fix too usually)

Today I jumped and danced for joy in my garden.

Being late may and weather forecast was saying 35F for low last night and possible mixed/snow I "assumed" they meant snow in high elevations. Low and behold I went on the deck at 10:22 for a smoke last night and it took a few moments to sink in as I noted the large snow flakes coming down, then that the roofs had near an inch on them, panic finally set in as I realized the ground was actually accumilating snow too! Ran to the garden to witness plants knocked to ground and covered with 1/2" of wet snow. With little hope but lack of anything else to do proceeded to shake and brush the snow off my 26 heirloom tomato and 6 pepper plants as I stood them back up with freezing hands and brushed the snow away from the stems.

Was up at 5am drinking coffee but didn't let the chickens out until 7 for fear of what I'd see in the garden. Beyond my wildest dreams the snow was ending when I'd realized it was there last night and the plants are still green this morning! I'll be purchasing a roll of plastic to tent off my beds today. Forecast is calling for mixed percipitation again...
