What did you do in the garden today?

Fall planting: I've been trying to get seeds planted - I have planted some beets, green beans, and carrots, and trying the Rutabega again. The current rutabagas have been devoured by the cabbage moth babies, and I've not been very proactive with them. So, I figure I may have enough time to get some better looking rutabagas before hard frost.

In addition, I will plant some more green beans, carrots and beets, but also some mustard greens, which we enjoy.

I've been harvesting some cabbage also.

i will have to do harvest, watering, and weeding tomorrow. i spent today getting mr muddy and ds1 ready to go on an adventure followed by processing quail by myself for the first time.

Well, I looked at the butternut squash. Out of 4 hills, probably 18-20 plants, I have 1 (one) single tiny 2" long butternut squash.

This will be the "remember the year we only got one butternut squash?" Sigh.

Same here, mine ones have countless female flowers but almost no male flowers, sigh~

I tried to get my chickens, goats, and bun-bun to eat the marigolds and none of them seem interested....

My chickens love the borage and comfrey, they've eaten all the potted ones and all the ones in the raised beds they can reach. But, they won't eat marigolds. Probably a good thing since the snails and slugs love marigolds. Dry as it is now, slugs and snails aren't much of a problem anymore.

so I can't avoid getting huge whiffs. Not the most pleasant smell in the world, as flowers go....I know some people like that sort of smell. I'd prefer roses....

Yeah I love the smell, but then i love the smell of tomato vines too.

I asked about keeping peppers over winter before. I remember a few, “I don’t think so,” answers, but I don’t know if anyone came across this after I asked that. Apparently pepper plants can be saved for a few years.

I put 5 in the greenhouse last fall and 3 of them wintered over. The ones I cut back did the best. That said, I think I should have fed them more and earlier, they didn't grow much nor produce much. Still learning.

Watered tonight and I'll water again tomorrow, had a doctor's visit this morning and since I accidentally locked myself out of the house afterwards, went fishing for a while. That seems logical, right? I'll need to can some of the trout tomorrow, DP will be away so I'll try to get the cowboy candy done too (DP hates the smell). Bottom fell out of our egg sales so time to pickle some eggs too. If I hard cook too many eggs DP can always make deviled eggs or potato salad.

Good morning gardeners. I've been busy the last few days. We got a pretty good overnight rain the night before last. Temps yesterday were in the low 80's. I had to drive to Boston for a medical appointment. Traffic wasn't too bad so I stopped at the grocery store on the way home then mowed the backyard after lunch. I plan on taking it a little easier today. I didn't have time to pick any vegetables yesterday, but did get a few things today. It's moving day for DD so I picked some fresh green beans and chard for her. I did get my first okra today and another cucumber, but not much else is ready. I do have a couple of zucchini developing and another cucumber. The tomatoes are taking their time ripening, but they are looking good. Both the rutabagas and chard I planted 5 days ago are poking up through the dirt. I also thinned my cabbage plants. A lovely ladybug came to the rescue of my bell peppers. I planted marigolds and basil with them but the bugs (I have no idea what they are) were wreaking havoc on them. Ladybug to the rescue. I also saw some wasps buzzing around the garden as well. I'm still holding my breath for my peaches. They are continuing to get bigger and looking quite healthy. I speculate that they should be ready to pick either next week or soon after. I may mow the front yard after the moving truck is gone. I don't plan on any weed whacking until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. A side note on the Farm House white bread I made recently. I finally defrosted and sliced into the loaf and it was really good. It makes great sandwiches too. I will definitely keep that recipe. Have a great day everyone.

Cut a huge limb off a tree two days ago. Cut, chipped and burned most of it yesterday. Need to finish layer today and then plan how to get the remainder of the limb cut down without hitting the house. In the meantime, I'm doing a sidejob today with a tree service crew taking down two dying oaks. The irony...
