What did you do in the garden today?

I'm going to grab a bottle of kombucha, sit on the porch, and sort and clean some of the potatoes I dug. I found the easiest way to clean them is to let all the dirt dry, then put on a pair of exfoliating gloves to rub off all the dirt.

I need to get all the ones I hit with the shovel out. They're going in the oven tonight. :drool

It rained last night or this morning, not sure which, so no need to water. That's good, my hands are full with other things. The new kitten has fleas. Well... Had. We've already treated the cats, but now I'm stripping every piece of fabric in the RV and washing like a madwoman. Got to finish before bedtime.

My hope is that we'll cut off the chance of an infestation altogether. Don't have any carpet, so that's helpful. I hope. Ugh.

Good luck stopping the fleas @Elyrian1, and grats on the new kitty.

Dumped 2 more of my potato bags but only got a few red potatoes. That's fine, I'll still do it again next year, they take so little care and space are are so easy to harvest. The russets did better but I think I'll make a big batch of mashed potatoes tonight. Ooo with mushroom gravy!

I'm really hoping to wrap up the run roof project this weekend. Then I can concentrate on fall garden cleanup.

Keeping chickens is very much like keeping a garden. You keep thinking of new chicks or plants you want. You keep changing things around. You add on and make improvements.

The good thing about gardens (I'm in zone 5) is that they're done for about 4 months of the year. After about a month of "being done," though, I'm planning for the next year's garden. Which I can do sitting on the couch with a good cup of coffee. :thumbsup

12 chickens are packed for sale tomorrow. Bunnies will also go to be sold, but I'll get them in the morning.

Picked a good amount of green beans. Meant to water the garden tonight, but getting chickens sorted tool awhile. The beans, beets, mustard, turnips all look good.

Brussel sprouts.... I don't think I'll plant again.

Planted in late May...and here is what they look like:

PATHETIC!! This is one variety...nothing to speak of after 4 months!

This variety is doing better, but I'm still not impressed.

AAAANND...
Even with insect netting, some cabbage loopers got in! Not from them laying eggs through the netting that I can see. So, I wonder if a kid opened the netting ...but, they really would have no reason to do that, and they aren't in the habit of gardening either. Anyway...too much effort and space for too little return.

I like to put the upper blossoms in salads but the smaller sprouts are better eating you do not want them huge ?
Bigger they get woody
No, not huge. And the one variety is definitely better. However, after 4 months, I’m underwhelmed with the plant and product. I should harvest the good stuff soon, see if we can get anymore.

Sometimes I wish I were in a gardening zone where I could rest but then I get fresh veggies pretty much year round in zone 9A. Getting things ready now. Got some brussel sprouts in yesterday. Went through my seed stash today and I've got spinach, lettuce, kale, parsley, Cilantro and sweet pea seed ready to go. Only other I need is collard and onions and the onions have to wait until the plants come in @ the feed store. Only thing after that is getting the winter cover crop goin.
