What did you do in the garden today?

Do we have any folks that were in the path of those horrible tornadoes last night? If so have they checked in? I can't imagine what a literal nightmare that must have been.

No dairy shortages here but there are a lot of dairy farms in Oregon so that might be part of it. Then again, now I'm craving real cream that's really fresh. Dang it @WthrLady! I'll bet it's like the difference between fresh eggs and store bought isn't it? /shakes cranky fist at WthrLady.

Wild and stormy here today but Penny still got her walk this morning albeit a short one. I sent off the box of home canned goods to our friend in Portland but I'm really glad I didn't include a jar of the dilly beans. I must have made a huge mistake with them and doubled the salt or something. I just opened a jar and all I could taste was SALT with a faint garlic taste. Oh well, that and the too sweet rotel that I made are my only big fails...so far. Well there was that can of salsa that broke in the canner but that was just one jar. Oh and IS rotel supposed to be sweet? Just asking for a friend. :)

Going to can more jars of apple pie filling, DP was an absolute hero and peeled and cored the last bag of apples that had been sitting on the porch. Perfect timing too, we've used all but one quart and one pint of the ones I canned earlier. Tomorrow I'm going to get jalapenos and a few other mixed hot and sweet peppers and can a bunch more pickled jalapenos and cowboy candy.
There were tornadoes about an hour away and we happened to be out that way at restaurant with family but we are all safe! On the way home we passed one area that had about 14 cars off on the side of the road with lots of emergency vehicles. I saw on a news feed later that night that they believe a tornado crossed the road and caused damage to the cars but the damage wasn’t anything like I’m seeing when the tornadoes touched down.

@karenerwin Glad you're safe! The damage from these storms has been stunning.

Today I got one of the garden beds filled, then covered the whole stretch. I need to wander on down to the home depot soon and see if they've got slim enough PVC to make hoops with. Doesn't need to do much more than keep the frost cover weight off the plants. Right now the collard greens I bought are the tallest thing in there and they keep getting bent out of shape. Everything is doing well, but still no sign of the leeks. I can't recall off-hand what their germination period is like. Got another garlic shoot coming up. They've been slow to sprout this year.

My hands are sore from shoveling... but I'd like to get that last empty box filled tomorrow. Then I'll get some more things planted as the weather allows. We'll see. I worked pretty hard the last two days and I'm still tired from the flu thing we had.

Kitties came home absolutely zonked. They've been sleeping and lazing around all day recovering from anesthesia. Chill is good. They're less likely to hurt themselves if they just sleep.

So happy to hear you are safe. After my initial post regarding the devastation in Kentucky I learned there were at least 5 other states that were hit really hard. The remnants of those storms started blasting New England yesterday evening. I’m up early waiting for sunrise to see the damage. Stay safe everyone.

Nothing happening in the garden here! Chilly, but warmer than normal. We did get some branches down in the wind last night. @Wee Farmer Sarah - how did you fare?

I am at a loss as to what to do with my chicken. The pine tar hasn't helped. I ordered a heated pet bowl so I can put peepers on the one pecking at her so she can drink. My 2nd coop has littles in it right now so I can't separate her like I'd normally do. I wish she would just molt already! :he I could put her in a crate - but to what end, till she molts next year? Argh.

You can get the pine tar off with some cooking oil, then give her a bath with a little Dawn dish soap (blue) to get the oil off. Be sure to rinse her well in clear running water to get the soap out (a soft shower, maybe?).

What a mess. Makes me think of the saying, No good deed goes unpunished. You had the best of intentions anyway. ❤️

If they were off to one side, that was straight line winds...also very scary and very powerful.

How are things? I hope you don't have any damage and are just helping out your neighbors.

Could you make her comfortable enough in a kennel for now? Not idea for sure.
Stayed out super late, drank a little more than I should but hey, my husbands boss left in one piece so it’s all good
Sounds like a win, win to me. :)

I washed the apple pie filling jars this morning and the tops look sealed, but the contents completely fill the jars, no air space visible.

Do you guys think they're okay as long as the tops looks sealed?
