What did you do in the garden today?

Local Academy store had a smallish dehydrator on sale. Almost bought it. But I already have a 9-tray Excalibur So I did not buy it, I do a lot of veggies and larger fruit with it but there are times when stuff is on sale @ the grocery store in smaller quantities and I don't take advantage because it's not enough to fill the Excalibur. On the other hand, we have enough appliances that take up space without being used much and I don't want to add to that pile. What to do, what to do!

What did I do on the garden today? Onions are fragile when first planted so I do not like to mess around in the bed until they grow a little bit and get stronger. Today was the day. Have probably 200 onions planted and weeds gettin almost as big as the plants. Spent 4 hrs pullin weeds & puttin down half composted compost as a mulch. Lots of chicken & goat poop in that mulch!

Giving her a friend that wont pick on her....
you won't know if the friend wont pick... until you try and if it does pick, now there's another failed attempt at understanding chicken math :D

Some birds are just timid until they grow a bit bigger. I found that once they started laying eggs, it's like the other hens picked on them less, like, ok you are finally earning your keep around here.

Can you give her a friend that won’t pick on her? Poor girl.
She's 2nd in charge, she is the meanest of them all! Her sister is #1 & the one that does most of the picking. She might just beat up anyone that I put in with her but it's a great idea & I'll have to think about that. Maybe I can put #3 in there. Either way, she'll roost with everyone at night, only a net divider & she shares the long wall of her run with them.

It's so weird how a bird will stand there while others pick them till they bleed, yet they'll chase anyone away that comes up to the feeder. :idunno

The struggle is real. :hugs

Seriously, I get it. I have so many appliances I could use (like a pressure canner) but I just don't have the room.

It is weird how they’ll do that! I think sometimes they just feel vulnerable and don’t know what to do even if they are one of the top flock members.

I've noticed this too, a couple of the shy girls now are pretty much like everyone else. Their rank is no higher, they just aren't as easily cowed anymore.

So glad your eyes are better @igorsMistress!

Thank you! She does have a mash & is totally enjoying being by herself. Her crop is huge, she has food all over her face & hasn't pulled her piggy face out of her bowl since I put her out there! I think she was so stressed running from everyone picking on her all the time & the fact she couldn't preen herself clean. Hopefully she's on the mend.

give her some boiled egg yolk.
