What did you do in the garden today?

Def not hatching any more birds here - I have too many as it is. :gig I say that because I had to bathe a chicken in my house - chickens don't come in my house! But I'm sure by the weekend I'll want more again. :lau

So I did bring my troubled bird inside to wash out the pine tar - NEVER again. She was such a mess & it was stressing her & everyone else out. She's super skinny & I feel bad. She's separated out & will remain so. Hopefully she can/will relax. The Dawn did a good job, I'd say I got out 90% of the tar with 2 washes & rinses.

I'm bummed because I used all my onions & shallots already & probably half of my garlic. Who knew I used so much of that stuff!

Glad you got "Piney" cleaned up! Hopefully she will recover, gain weight quickly and live happily ever after. Have you tried wetting her feed to make a mash of it, or mixing it with a bit of yogurt? Good luck with her!

Thank you! She does have a mash & is totally enjoying being by herself. Her crop is huge, she has food all over her face & hasn't pulled her piggy face out of her bowl since I put her out there! I think she was so stressed running from everyone picking on her all the time & the fact she couldn't preen herself clean. Hopefully she's on the mend.

How did she get covered in pine tar? Oh trust me I know all about birds getting into stuff they need NOT be getting into. Remind me to tell you the story of how the cockatoo got into a cooker full of deep frying oil one day, not to mention the resulting mess through the kitchen, parler, bathroom etc etc.

Just curious :)

Edit: I had a smaller one that the rest would pick on as well when I first got them. A few weeks in isolation with them unable to physically get to her, she was able to get bigger, get better, and the 'see but don't touch' with the rest, when I finally did introduce her back into the flock, they pretty much left her alone after that.

Same here. I ran out of garlic while pickling/canning. I picked the garlic and used it all within just a few weeks. Many of the onions went into pickling or canned salsa as well, and the rest of the onions were eaten as we cooked with them. I've been on store bought onion and garlic for over a month, possibly 2 months in the case of garlic. I planted a full 4'x8' bed for next year of garlic, shallots and walking onions and will plant at least that much of onions come spring.

Uh oh, I just realized I've already begun planning the garden for next year without even realizing it. Turns out I have 3 of 6 raised beds planned out already. It's a downward spiral from here. :gig

Now that I'm thinking about planning for the Spring, can I plant tomatoes where potatoes were and potatoes where tomatoes were? I don't want to plant in the same spots, but I plant so many tomatoes and potatoes that I don't have much flexibility to but to swap the two each year. There's is a 10'x10' area I could move some of them into where there was 3 sisters planted this past year, but 10'x10' doesn't hold all of my rows of either potatoes of tomatoes... Also, can cucumbers go where tomatoes or potatoes were planted the year before? I need to move them as well...

A few weeks ago I posted pictures of my totes ready for garlic and the watering system. I have a follow up of what they look like today. Not doing bad, now if I can keep from killing it off like I did last time we'll be doing good!
I love your system! we'd still have slugs and snails but I bet weeds aren't too much of an issue for you!

That was me last year, this year I still have a ton of garlic and shallots hanging in the garage/barn.

I hear you, it's a long way to spring but I still can't wait!
Morning Gardeners.. Stopped raining today .. We are 31 degrees outside now :celebrate
Same here, there was ice on the puddles when we went for our morning walk. But still much nicer than the rain and wind.

Well I reprocessed the apple pie filling and it's resting for 10 minutes before I take the jars out. It took a little fiddling about but I got the rest of the cut up apples finished as well. The jars haven't leaked in the canner so I think I'm good this time. I'm going to can the leftover syrup with apple bits in pint jars, it'll be good on pancakes, ice cream, and maybe pork chops. Next are pickled and candied jalapenos, and then the candied pecans. Perfect time to watch all our regular Christmas movies as I work. :)

Can you give her a friend that won’t pick on her? Poor girl.
