What did you do in the garden today?

I cleaned both coops today... Normally I clean them every weekend but due to circumstances I hadn't cleaned them in nearly 4 weeks. So much poop...

It took me over 3 hours! I'm pooped. But at least it's done....

Afternoon all. This has been a day. My dad isn’t making any progress in rehab, he has been in there for three weeks and my mom doesn’t think they’ve done a darn thing but make sure his feeding tube is full. 😔 Today was the first time he has smiled in a while and it was when Mom told him he’s going home. I had to work on her to convince her to call a particular hospice care place and get the ball rolling so we can be prepared to get him home, but she finally did. She didn’t want to get trigger happy? Um, things take time to arrange and unless you take control these people will brush you aside and don’t give a damn. I insisted that she call and at least talk to them. That’s my win for today. Second win, I called my son and told him we might need to have his help with furniture moving and he has a truck again so we’re good. My folks live in a single wide mobile and any bed they bring in will have to go in the living room. The furnishings are too big to go down the hall to be stored in the spare bedroom so we’re going to have to rent a storage unit for a bit too. There are so many things to figure out. I’m going outside to shred branches and let my mind go blank for a while. Take care all.

Pooped from poop huh?

So I repotted some of my seeded starts last night. What I’m finding is that the starts are sending their tap roots straight down and out the bottom of the 6 packs and 4 packs I’m reusing to start my seeds in.
Do most of you start seeds in things with no holes in the bottom? I thought they would grow and put out more roots in the container before I needed to repot them. 🤷‍♀️ At this rate im going to run out of space very quickly ! 😳😔
The only caveat to planting things without drainage holes is overwatering and this drowning your seedlings. What are you planting in the paks? It's ok to remove the plant and its roots carefully as you're repotting. Repotting is usually done when 2 true leaves have matured.

God be with you as you care for your dad and figure out all the details. Elder care is challenging and taxing on all. Advise you to learn all you can from hospice caregivers, and online. I had never learned more about elder care than when I had to care for my dad.

About 5 years ago, my dad ended up in the hospital. They weren't doing much to help him other than milk his insurance for whatever they could charge. Had him on all kinds of meds for no reason and set him up with physical therapy which was dumb cause he was clearly never going to walk again except for a few steps. He gave me legal POA over his healthcare and I pulled him out of everything. Moved him over to the VA. They took him off all the unnecessary medication and gave him a motorized wheelchair to get around. He actually spent the last year of his life in relative comfort... His case is not unique. I've heard many other cases where hospitals just do whatever they can get away with all for the insurance money and don't give a whit about the effect to the patient. Especially if they are terminal.

Yesterday, fence got finished, I pulled out the burned parts of the garden and watered the rest. I think almost every single garlic I planted last year is coming up successfully. I counted 32 plants. I've got a handful of collard greens growing, and now that I thought about it I do need collard seeds. I'll check locally.

About half the carrots I planted got burned, but the other half are small and green still. The spinach hasn't been growing really, but neither did it die. So it has impressed me. We got down to 12F at one point this month. Leeks and bunching onions are still alive but super super tiny and not really growing either.

Forecast says warm temps for the next two weeks so I'm thinking I'll get some more greens planted up. I've also got onions to plant out and bare root strawberries that need to get planted soon.
Oh, y'all are having a heat wave. I used to live in E. Texas, and trying to get cool weather crops to mature before burning up was a challenge. The swings in temps are hard on the little plants.
