What did you do in the garden today?

We use a lot of onions in our house... I probably have close to 80 planted. Not counting the green onions that I resurrected from the chill bin in my fridge cause they were going bad. I typically dice up half my onions and freeze them. The rest I store in a wood drawer with my potatoes.

Well, we busted our butt today but didn't quite get everything done that I wanted to finish up. It's supposed to rain for the next 4 days so I REALLY wanted to get more plants in the ground and seeds sown. We did manage to finish the new raised beds and lattice is on but I need to add some stakes so they don't bulge over the middle bed and look funny. We ran out of time before sundown but we managed to get at least one bed filled so I could sow the runner beans. I also sowed the leaf lettuce in the area below the lattice.

I think I have most everything sown now except one more lettuce bed and some sunflowers. Oh, and some watermelon and pumpkins that I'm going to do down by the compost pile. Still have around a dozen plants to get in the ground though...

This evening I was walking through the hoop house and noticed the beans and corn are up. And I have to confess that I planted something in front of the eggplant and I forgot what it was... 😂 It sprouted too....whatever it is. Damn, getting old sucks!

I love columbine but we don't have enough places that aren't full sun yet to plant them. The shrubs and trees along the west side of the property are growing so it's just a matter of time. I can't wait to be able to plant foxglove too.

From what I've read, they will grow in full sun or partial shade. I've just planted mine in a flower bed that typically stays shaded until mid-to-late morning. I found a seed packet called "Starry Nights" columbine that looks so pretty but I have been able to get them to sprout and grow. As soon as I saw these, I snatched them up. I will try to get a picture tomorrow or Tuesday, depending on the rain. They are very pretty....

I have columbine seeds to plant...did yours come up?

We planted horseradish and rhubarb today. I've been harvesting chives and asparagus spears so far.
I'm not sure if my new Blueberry made it or not, I thought it was dead, but it looked like it had 2 little leaves close to the ground. I have 6 established Blueberry bushes that are getting ready to bloom.
We've had cold windy weather lately. I need the honeybees to get out of the hive and pollenate my fruit trees, but they don't like cold or wind. :(
Plums blooming, peaches blooming, apples, pears and cherries are about ready to bloom any day.
Garlic and walking onions are doing great so far. I'm really pleased, I've never gotten garlic to do well. I guess they just wanted to live where my wildflowers used to be... 😏

I planted some last year and they never came up. I planted the rest of the seed packet this weekend so I guess I'll know in the next few weeks if they come up. But the ones I bought from Home Depot today should self-seed, even if my seeds don't sprout.

Today the hubby built a trellis for our cantaloupes, then put chicken wire around them and I planted green and bell bell peppers, and about 30 different herbs, well 29 I planted sweet Basil twice lol I was not about to un-plant them!

I have two more herbs and sunflowers to plant, then I think I am done with planting until fall!

@NewBoots - some rhubarb sure does! I have one variety (Victoria) that flowers every year, the other variety was here when we bought the place & I have yet to see it do so. The flowers are pretty too, but I always pull them when I see them.

Got everything in the ground this weekend, direct sowed a bunch of different pole & bush beans, squashes (zucchini, kubocha, spaghetti, yellow vine & bush), cukes (suyo long, pickling), herbs (sage, dill, parsley, lavender, thyme), scallions & more lettuce. All watered & mulched. It may be a bit early for some of it but we have a busy month coming up so it was now or never. Hopefully it stays warm(ish). Just waiting for tomato & pepper time. The onions are starting to recover from the squirrel tramplings, but they are very behind. I kick myself for not protecting them from the beginning.

Got the bee trap up too. Can't wait for my first dead carpenter bee.

Thank u for being so nice!
BYC is a nice place. The garden and baking threads have really nice, helpful people.

I look at it this way: No one was born knowing this stuff. We all had to learn somehow. Hopefully we had kind teachers along the way; I've had some very kind and very mean teachers. Guess which one I want to be known as?

Experience can be be a kind or very cruel teacher. She doesn't really care if you learn, because she'll dish out the lesson over and over until you do.

When it comes to gardening (and baking), I want people to succeed and keep at it!

Pick them when they are about golf ball size and if you still don't like them, pickle and can them. We love the tops and the chickens love any that get too big, they eat them tops, woody beets and all.

I'm so jealous of you folks and your fruit trees, I wish we had even just a full acre. Oh well, we're more than lucky to have what we do have.
You don’t need a huge space to have fruit trees Boots. There are patio/dwarf options that only get 4 to 6 feet tall. We hqve 1/5 acre and all the fruit trees are dwarves. Now I need two more so I have the 7
