What did you do in the garden today?

So I tried to dig up a plant and put it in a Solo cup to transplant. Even though I was very careful and got most of the taproot, the plant is quickly wilting and going downhill. I don't think it is going to be possible to transplant them... 😕 I'm not heading home until Saturday too...

dig them up on friday and wrap them in kitchen towel then wet them. keep them in a plastic bag till you get home. also cut most leaves as soon as you dig them up. that's what my mother did a few years ago and it worked.

Just ate an awesome salad with some fresh red Russian Kale from the garden and few green tops off the onions that were falling sideways!
Wow it was so refreshing!
Cannot wait for the spinach and lettuce to get big enough to have it on there too!
Definitely gonna seed more for this fall to try and do year round!

my lettuce and spinach are done for the season. I didn't harvest them as I want to save seeds.

So crazy about different areas, my lettuce and spinach are just getting their 3rd and 4th leaves!

Rained (actually stormed) yesterday, I will go out to see if there were any damage. Lots of leaves on the blueberries and raspberries! Potatoes up, need to cover ;)

I need to weed today! That sounds so nice now, ask me in July, lol

Got nothing done today other than some watering. Black fly season has begun and the first 3-5 days are usually too unbearable to be outside without protective gear.
We don't get them down here in CT like you do up north, but we go wheeling in NH every year this time & OMG I can't handle those flies, it's insane! & no bug spray keeps them away! I don't know how you do it. Where are you located? A general location is fine, if you don't mind me asking...

You wouldn't believe how many dandelions I have here, it drives DH crazy that I wish for them. LOL. I sure do wish I could send you some somehow.
Tomatoes and beans on the plants, yay! Dehydrating extra lean ground beef to make pemmican, rolling it out like dough and leaving in the oven overnight
Off to google pemmican....
Rhubarb bed built! This is in the N side of the compost bin. It is 6x6, so each planting square is 3x3. The cost of wood!!! Crazy.

We have 4 Rhubarb plants. One is in a 4” pot that we just got in the mail. The other 3 are in very large pots on the deck, and were dormant roots They are growing well, but do I transplant now? Are Rhubarb very temperamental with transplanting when young? My guess is that they should transplant fine. But, anyone know?
Rhubarb is very tough, transplant & water & it will be fine. Obviously you won't get anything this year & be gentle next year. I love that everything you build is quality & pretty. Like your bean towers, I just love them.

So I separated & transplanted a ton of flowers to in front of the chicken run. I've been piling wood chips along the fence for years, it's now good soil so I'm hoping the flowers do well, it'll look better but block my view a little of the chickens. I need to water all that today.

Tonight should be the last night to bring the starts in, then we're above 50 every night. Took long enough! If those tomatoes ever show up from FedEx they'll be ready to go in.

@igorsMistress - interesting! Are you making the pemmican as a survival food to store or do you actually just like it, lol? I read this & it made me laugh:
Note that pemmican doesn’t taste very good – and this is another reason it is such a good survival food.

Why would you want to pack something which isn’t tasty?

Consider that the Canadian Arctic Rescue team recommends putting a can of dog food in your car as survival food.

The idea is that dog food tastes bad, and you won’t be tempted to eat through it so quickly (as you might with yummy granola bars). The dog food idea is interesting, but I’d rather pack pemmican for my survival food!

@TJAnonymous why don’t you just buy some dandelion seed? Available on Amazon and eBay, organic even.

I want to see how it performs as a survival food in our climate. It’s another experience, another skill.
