What did you do in the garden today?

The only good thing about THW is how much chickens love them.

I sat around after watering this am, wondering why my watermelon male & female flowers don't open simultaneously, so I can't hand pollenate, and hoping that something pollenated them. I'll be sad if none of those little melons develop.

My hens won't touch them.

It is def not aluminum, I have to say I wasn't excited it was non stick even! I generally only cook in cast iron, or enameled cast iron.

The inner pot in an Instant Pot is stainless steel. That was the clincher for me. I prefer not to use non-stick pans either.

I dug my garlic today too. This time, I used a pitchfork instead of a shovel. I like it better. I did still manage to stab a couple, but that's ok, as I need some garlic, and those can go first. I also built some drying racks for garlic now, onions later.

They're different sizes as they're made out of scrap wood, so I have to go with what I find.

A friend gave me a bunch of onion sets, and I planted them in the garlic bed. They have a bit of time to grow, and I'll see what we get. They wouldn't have kept until next spring, so might as well plant them.

These tomatoes are the variety Hungarian Heart, which is new to me.

That plant has the biggest tomatoes of any of them! I'll be growing this variety again.

I think we got nearly 1/3 to 1/2" of rain last night. With the stuff we got yesterday morning, surely at least 1/2" so a nice soaking. We might get more tonight. I'll take it.

Picked Basil and Blueberries today. Everything got watered and I picked some weeds, that took hours, but it's done now.
I ate a bite of my celery; it was so good fresh from the garden. I'm going to look up how to preserve some so I don't waste any.

Something attacked my sitting duck hen some time today. She is fine but her 3 day old duckling is gone along with all her eggs. What would do that in the daytime? Their pen is covered with netting but there's a big gap where the netting has been pulled away from the fence.

I'm so upset. I've been trying to get a successful hatch from my ducks for 2 yrs now...

It was you! Now I remember! My rattlesnakes are bush beans. They're ok, but I'm not doing bush beans any more as they hurt my back to pick.

I love pickled celery, carrots & cauliflower! Either just straight out of the jar or on a salad or with a bloody mary...

I got the soaker hoses in & watered the peppers. No rain for me tonight. Adjusted the rutabaga netting - man those things are HUGE! I think it's a skunk rooting around in the garden, last night it dug up my paver walk way. I can't complain too much because it isn't going in the beds & I suppose I don't mind it eating grubs! It got through a pretty small hole in the fence, too small for a raccoon I think so skunk or possum I guess.

That would be the opposite of DW's "recipe". A crapload of vinegar and a little bit of oil. I can't deal with it.


You must live a lot farther south than I do!


Grit is for grinding up the food in their gizzards. If they get anything other than commercial feed (kitchen scraps or forage) they NEED grit. But if they forage outside they might find enough on their own, I've never bought grit because there is everything from sand size to rocks in the area between the barns. They spend most of their time there after the barn gets opened in the morning, especially while the sun is high.


Time for new glasses Karen! What I see is stylized 7.2.22. I think a more clear font would have been a better choice.

I think I would water and keep the bushes alive then transplant in the fall after they drop their leaves and go dormant.


Great in the winter when you need to run the furnace anyway, not as great in the summer. My prior house had that setup. You might want to look into a heat pump water heater for "off heating season" use.


DD2, my sister-in-law and I spent 3 hours yesterday cleaning out the 10x12 stall coop and the barn alley. Couldn't bring the tractor any further in than just the bucket so everything had to be raked the 30' from the coop. Six 5' buckets were filled and dumped in the compost bins, another spread over the alpacas' poop/pee pile.

Hi lol...sorry it's taking me forever to respond... the days were flying as I'm trying to get blueberries in and arguing with my tomatoes.
I'm pretty far south..north Alabama...but not the farthest since I can't grow bananas unless I buy a huge pot or grow bag(I debate it often)
My girls free range and they've been doing so since about 6 or 7 weeks old(?time lol) I put out grit for them but they seem to like the pebbles and sand in the garden more. Sadly they also love my cucumbers!

Your tomatoes are gorgeous... mine hate life this year and I have no idea why.

I dehydrate mine for soups and salad mix in for winter.
