What did you do in the garden today?

I'm definitely blaming @WthrLady when my DH asks me why I have a gazillion seed packets of tomatoes for next spring's garden.... 😂
I just placed an order too - got me back on track to keep buying seeds each month so I don't need to fret if nothings in stock in December. My DH is on board - since I bought out/inherited the next door farms yearly plant sale signs and all.

Yeah, I like buying well ahead of time....especially since I usually don't want to spend money after Christmas when I've usually spent too much. 😂

I've been digging trenches to direct water from places that haven't got gutters yet to someplace where I can use it. Started a monsoon garden bed that has caught at least 200-300 gallons in last week. I know because I was sump pumping it out of a barrel a few times before I trenched.

I got to an area along the fenceline that has established Arizona Cypress (a juniper type of tree) and it has years of mulched foliage (not leaves, not needles but an evergreen type of foliage) under it. It was so nice and spongy and easy to dig I decided to try it as mulch/compost in my new Greenhouse Row garden and some of the potted tomatoes in there. I sifted out the bigger stuff and round 'cones' and put it in half the tomatoes and started on a bed of eggplant and cukes. This is an experiment.

I'm thinking the AZ Cypress litter is an acidifier since the trees are evergreens and have resin. Arizona soil is notoriously alkaline so maybe this will balance it a little.

Just a note that I have planted seeds (tomatoes, peppers) from packets marked 2004 (from Totally Tomatoes) last year and this year and many many more than I expected sprouted and produced very well. So you might have tomatoes and pepper seeds for a few years from those packets.

We tried some yogurt which was 6 months past its sell by date, a few weeks ago... it didn't taste any different from fresh.

Oh btw, does anyone know why they put a use by date on honey? :idunno

Yall help! I tried to give away bout 7 lb cucumbers and unable to...sure wish we all were closer to each other so we could share!
I have to figure out what to do with these cucumbers and about a dozen tomatoes (all different kinds n sizes) before in the morning!
any suggestions?!
and woke up to a puddle from our refrigerator again and we leave tomorrow for a week!!!
Ugh
Oh that just sucks. Went thru that a few months ago with a freezer.
Worse case, just knock on a neighbors door, be a good neighbor and give it to them. That kind of Karma tends to make it's way back to you over time. At least you know they won't be wasted that way and you may have made a potential new friend.

How it's tagged makes a difference.

If it says 'expiration' or 'use by' that typically means you should not eat it after that date due to the potential of bad bacteria which could make you sick.

If it says 'best by,' then the food is generally safe to consume provided the can is not rusted, dented, or seal broken. Food past this date may change in consistency or taste but shouldn't make you sick to eat it.
