What did you do in the garden today?

I need to clean the coops really badly. They haven't been cleaned well in a month because of weather or family stuff. It's supposed to be near 60 today but the grand baby's birthday is tomorrow and they are here to celebrate. She turns 4 years old so we are taking her to the museum of discovery where she can play to her heart's content. DS is transitioning from active duty to the Air Guard in April so he can have a normal life again.

I want some Welsummer pullets! I picked up 2 last summer but one died in a freak accident and the other turned out to be a Roo. 🙄

Next weekend I will be starting some seeds indoors! It's almost that time, ladies and gentlemen!

A friend gave me a bunch of saved seeds from his tomatoes. One of them is called Supersauce, and he said it was MUCH better than Amish Paste. I googled it, and yup, sure enough, it's a hybrid. So my expectations went down the tube.

Has anyone ever planted seeds saved from hybrids? Did you get anything worth anything? I'm sure it depends totally on the individual hybrid, but I might just plant a few pots of this and see what I get. If I do, I'll be sure to report.

Good morning gardeners. I got a self waterer put in for the Jasmine yesterday. If I like how it works I’m going to make another for the night blooming Jessamine. I don’t think I water those enough in summer so hopefully this will help. I’m going to try fertigation with those and gradually add nutrients to the water. Hubs got me this terra cotta pot that you fill with water and tie plants to the outside. Eventually the roots will grow along the surface as the plants grow. I got a fern and something else to put on it so will post a pic when I get it done. All of the houseplants were getting too much light so hubs is going to build me a taller stand I can move them to. The low one will be great for growing lettuce and other greens. I like my Aerogardens and will use them also, but even the big one can only grow a couple of heads of lettuce in the long run. I want to grow spinach and it’s also a good place to get tomatoes and other stuff from the sprout stage to the transplant stage. This week I’ll be starting tomatoes in the Aerogarden so we can try the Kratky method for those. I got notification that the shade cloth has shipped. I’m happy it will be here before it gets hot! I was able to custom order it as one piece for the top which will be nice. The B is broody and she is MEAN! I heard a commotion in the yard and she was out there charging around. SMH. Sadly all four of the chicks I ordered died. One left the nest the first night and died from the cold. The other three were dead this morning. I gave them nutridrench and spent a good part of the day trying to get them to eat yesterday, but it didn’t go well and I didn’t have high hopes this morning. The Universe has decided it wasn’t meant to be. Since the B is broody I took all but the three blue eggs she was sitting on, she can have those. Anyway, I need to get busy with chores, I’ve been binge watching Netflix since I found the chicks. Have a good day all!

I’m really sorry about your chicks IM. That is just so heartbreaking! :hugs

I thought I'd be digging weeds today. Nope, the garden is still mostly snow covered. The south sides of the beds are clear, but the ground is too frozen to get a trowel in to dig up the Hairy Bittercress that is growing all over.

I don't mind that the ground is still frozen... I don't want the fruit trees to wake up too soon.
