What did you do in the garden today?

Today, I planted 4 - 50 foot rows of zipper peas, did my yearly move of my tomato beds to a different location, planted tomatoes, raked pine straw and mulched the new bed, checked my blueberries (looking good this year (thanks to the rain) and mulched the bushes with fresh pine straw and then I had lunch and got ready for the afternoon. :)

Garden question of the day:
When do you sow carrots seeds?

I find sources saying to site in early Spring as son as soil could be worked. How frost hardy are the seedlings really? I have a nantes type seed btw.
You can prewarm the soil. But, I wouldn’t sow until no danger of frost. I don’t think they are frost hardy - maybe if you prewsrm and also use frost blanket it could work to start earlier

FWIW, we sowed for fall harvest too, but found that end of June sowing is latest for what we grew. The ones sowed 1st-2nd week of July were smaller and not quite ready by late Oct. but, maybe a shorter season one would be better.

I moved a lot of compost today! I took our trailer and got a partial load of compost and shoveled it into the raised bed and the inground gardens. Then I went to my daughter’s church and dug out all the old soil in a 4 x10 raised bed and refilled it with new compost. My shoulder , elbow, wrist and back said ”Enough already!” 🤣
Oh, I also spread compost around 2 of the 3 apple trees and 2 of the 3 peach trees. Also stopped at local farm store and bought seed potatoes and onion sets. They only had red and white onion sets. No yellow onion sets. 😳. I also checked to see if they had any chicks because they are advertising “chick days”! Nope, 5 little ducklings was all they had in the whole store. 😳. The cashier said they sell out in 1 or 2 days.

I plant them in a pot when ever I harvest a pot, I keep them going. I live in the tropics, so I can grow them all year, but I got to watch out for the big white grubs. I think they come from moths, not sure.

I just picked a carrot today, it was kind of fat and about 7 inches long. I chopped it into small pieces and snacked on them all day. I will start picking one every day from here until the pot is cleared and start another one. I have another pot with carrots around 3 inches coming along.

My carrots grow big with pelleted chicken manure sprinkled on top and with 10,10, 10 fertilizer mixed into the potting mix.

Your grubs are likely a beetle. Moths come from caterpillars like butterflies.
