What did you do in the garden today?

I started Patrick (the dog) on zyrtec last week, it’s helped a ton. This is the first year he’s even had allergy issues! What shot does she get, if you don’t mind me asking?

I’m on all my meds, have 2 air filters running & barely leave the house so I’m not too bad yet but they say it’s nasty early because we had no winter. Being a hermit has its benefits. 😂
Abby, my dog, is on Zyrtec too but she’s still itchy, normal in Spring and Fall so we struggle together lol. The shot is called Cytopoint and it works well for her. She doesn’t even need Zyrtec when she gets it. She gets a booster once or twice each season and it isn’t cheap, but it keeps her from scratching which the Zyrtec doesn’t do when they’re really bad. Bathing Patrick once a week and/or wiping him down after being outside may help him too, especially if he gets itchy.

Good morning gardeners. I checked on my tomatoes and cucumbers last evening when I locked the coop. Yesterday was cool and breezy which seems to have helped with transplant shock. Those plants were in my hydroponic starter thing which really doesn’t provide enough light so they seemed a bit stressed with all the light the first day. Last night they were all perky and the cucumber is putting on more leaves already! I still have the jalapeños in the sprouter until they’re a bit bigger and have more roots. I used plain water to start the seeds, but when I fed the sprouts with a little bit of nutrients the cuke and jalapeños popped up finally. The cilantro never did sprout, but the seeds were a few years old. This weekend I’m going to get the lettuce going, the buckets have been sitting with water in them a couple of days to let it off has any chlorine before I set those up. I caught Frank, the dog, drinking out of one of them yesterday lol. Nerd. I have the water going for the olive tree this morning, then will move to other stuff through the day. The watering cycle every weekend has begun! We are expecting mid 80’s here and there with drops back into the 60’s/70’s when storms roll by, but temps should be mild enough to spend a good portion of the days outside. Yay!

I did save about a cup of daikon radish seeds. I'll plant a few in the garden just to try it, but the rest I'll put in the pasture in the fall. I did put seeds out last fall but our weather was so wonky so nothing grew. I bought them to help break up compacted soil in the pasture.

That's what our local farmers plant the daikon radish for, too. I was told that the roots would get longer than 12 inches, which is how they break up the soil. IDK, my daikon radishes did not get very long in my garden. But my main garden is by the lake and the soil is very sandy.

Also, I may have planted the radishes at the wrong time of the year. Since I wanted to eat the radishes, I planted them in late spring and I think it got too hot in the summer for them before they reached full size. Our farmers plant them in the fall and let them winter over. But we did not want to be pulling out rotted radishes the next spring.

What I was able to grow tasted pretty good. So, it was not a complete failure. Or, should I be more positive and say it was a partial success.

Excellent, thanks for the info! I’m unable to bathe him with the back thing for now. Thankfully the zyrtec seems to be working, but if it doesn’t I now know there are options. When I had my last dog 10-15 years ago they could only give her a steroid shot & they hated to do it because they are so hard on the organs. I’m glad to see things have come a long way since then & the pups now don’t have to be in misery.

So Patrick is big guy lol. You can use those dog wipes or a damp rag to just wipe him down to get the pollen and such off if you can’t bathe him and think it might help. Abby would see me with a washcloth and hide! They run through all the stuff and lay in all of it too lol. I’m glad the Zyrtec is working for him. I don’t know how big Patrick is, but the vet told me I can give Abby two Zyrtec a day and she’s around 50 lbs. Also, there’s a pill called Apoquel that they can take if the Zyrtec doesn’t work; it was a little cheaper than the shot but didn’t help long term for Abby. I’ve heard great things about it from other dog owners though.

He’s 28lbs & on 1 zyrtec a day. I am still on no bending so I can’t get down there to bathe him. Plus he won’t get near the tub unless I carry him in there & he’s well over my 5lb limit, lol. I can definitely wipe him down with a cloth when he comes in & climbs on his bed on the couch (yea, he’s spoiled, lol). We will see how he does on the zyrtec when the pollen really comes out here, that will be the real test. So glad we have options!

I have to do the same with Abby. She won’t even come near me if she thinks it’s time for a bath :gig
