What did you do in the garden today?

Aw, poor horse! Glad the benedryl helps.

Went out to feed/water the birds & everyone was acting weird. Big ole shake up in the hen house, new low man & she’s beat up. Her face is swollen & of course now my red is plucking her beard because she looks funny. 🙄 & the one who beat her up was all disheveled & Red is plucking her beard too. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Dang Red wasn’t even a part of it & she’s going to find herself alone.

Raining now. Rain forecast for later. Rain and wind after that. I think it's a good day to stay inside.

I'm still geeked about this: I'm going to get honey bees in about 6 weeks! We heard of someone who had all his gear for sale (hive, smoker, suit, extractor, and a bunch of other stuff) for $400, so we bought it all yesterday.

Did I tell you guys this already?! Anyway, I ordered the bees yesterday too. This was all I could talk/post about. Just like a kid, huh? :smack

I have a spot picked out for the hive: about 30 feet past the south end of my garden that's in a bit of a valley.

Maybe this will help my cherry trees decide to make cherries this year!

Crystal clear blue skies, light wind and 63 when I got up at 730. Winds are forecast to howl to 55 around lunch, which is no fun up on a ladder. I did that yesterday afternoon and ended up quitting as my ladder blew over every time I got off of it.
Inhaled a bowl of cereal and headed out to finish painting the old hoophouse. I let the birds out for a rare morning feed in the hayfield. Half hour into the painting job, the winds picked up and shifted, and a massive fog bank rolled in and the hens went running into the coop. Fog dropped visibility to 1/4 of a mile and temps dropped to 45. BRRRRRR.
I finished though and it looks great. There are spots I can't get to with roller or brush, and I'll hit those with spray paint on sunday.
I'll set up some plastic row covers then as well to hold moisture and get the soil heating. I also hung a bluebird box and moved the birdbath into one of the beds. The plan is for flowering vines/green beans on the trellis. There is already flax planted on the left bed. and the rest is for pollinator flowers, mostly perennials and anything else that strikes my fancy I guess. Ideally, I'm going for non-annuals and herbs, although herbs struggle here with our winter temps.

First round of rain missed me. More coming with damaging wind. I have a coon problem. Got my bird feeder and now 2 of my winter sown pots. Live and let live is not working. I have garden phlox up about 1 inch. Think I might divide them. They say zone 4. I might try some at my zone 3 cabin. I already have success with some plants that should not grow there. Black walnut , black raspberry and magic lillies.

Good afternoon!

I've been filling my new raised beds for a couple weeks now. First the branches at the bottom (Hugelkultur), then partially composted leaves/yard debris, then Black Kow (manure), wood ashes, peat moss, and now I am topping them off with fully rotted compost and the dirt from underneath the pile. I've added a cartful to each bed, but am taking a cool down as the sun is hot. Wind's picking up, a storm will be arriving later this evening.
