What did you do in the garden today?

This talk of cherry trees... I want a Montmorency cherry tree. We honeymooned in Door County, WI and they grow Montmorency cherries all over up there. They are delicious tart cherries for preserves, pies, juice, and eating fresh (I like them fresh at least). One of these days I'll order one - I just hate paying $60 for a twig sized fruit tree.

I did buy a new dwarf meyer lemon tree today. My first one was purchased 2 or 3 years ago and my dog knocked the pot down and chewed on the small sapling of a tree like it was a stick outside. Home Depot just got these in - they were still in the cart from their delivery truck and wrapped in plastic wrap from shipping - so I had the pick of the lot. I got a nice tall one that has some nice branching starting. It needed to be watered as their garden center didn't unpack and water them after shipping yet, but it looks great!

Then there's my Chicago fig tree... Not sure that made it through the winter this year. This is it's third season and I was really excited for more figs. I'm giving it a bit more time though to see if any of the leaf buds grow into leaves.

I have concluded that doing more than five kratky 5 gallon buckets with out a solution reservoir is too much work. Its easier to fill and check one 25 gallon solution bin than it is to check several.

It may be okay when the plants are small, but when they get big and start drinking a lot of solution, I feel like its too much work to fill each one by hand.

In addition, I think a string of wicking buckets on a 25 gallon solution reservoir has an advantage. The plants in fertilized potting soil don't need as much hydroponic solution. In addition, 2 inch holes can be drilled around the bucket and lined with weed fabric, so the plants won't get root bound and the roots will receive more oxygen.
I was coming to the same conclusion.

I noticed that both Lowes and TSC are carrying a variety of citrus trees for sale in a can. They had oranges, kumquat, limes, lemons, and a variegated pink lemon. I mulled over getting the pink lemon but ultimately passed it over because I didn't want to pay $40 for it. Anyone else see these around? I might go back in a few weeks and see if they have any of the pink lemon ones on sale.

Saw them last year and they were $20

Plucked some seedlings out of the outdoor pots. Potted them into solo cups. Mowed between rain showers. Some strong storms in the area but just some rain here.
Up here closer to Chicago we are windy today and storms have passed through. Should be just about over with the rain though - hourly shows clear after 8pm.
