What did you do in the garden today?

Finally got my chickens' nipple waterer made and hung up.

The chickens know there is water there but they haven't quite got the knack yet of getting the flow going. They are just pecking at them in a frustrated fashion. I'll see how they are getting on in the morning.

Per @jerryse 's suggestion, I hammered some rebar through the trap. Hoping to see something by morning. There was digging around the blueberries again, but nothing destructive, happily.

I am wishing I had the skill and drive to butcher out whatever I catch. I like gaining skills, especially ones that have been lost and that we may need in the future, but hate doing a bad job of something when it comes to a creature.

What do opossum, raccoon, and groundhog taste like...?

"Tastes like chicken?" 😂

I was pondering a little butchering area. I think I saw @BReeder! post a pic of his.
I know if I am prepared, I am more likely to do butchering, rather than feeling like it's too much.

Growing up, we had a stump, and some baling wire strung between trees in the backyard for the chickens. It was messy. I'd rather have a designated and organized area that I don't have to set up and put away.

I did a little watering of seeded areas and new transplants, and little picking up around the chicken run.

It feels like I did more today, because I'm so tired, but I guess I didn't.
Can't wait to be over this bug.

Checking in two weeks later...

Tomatoes are doing well, filling out and growing higher. I had to redo their support strings.

That's borage with the broad leaves, above ⬆️

I spotted my first plum tomato, too!

The basil has finally sprouted!

Watermelon vines had to be shifted back to the trellis.

The small sprouts in the back are cantaloupes.

The bush beans are blooming!

I think I planted them a little close...

Here are the green peppers and Summer squash plants. I placed the stakes a week ago but haven't tried tying up the plants yet.

I have some old cotton socks I'm going to fit to the squash vines to deter squash vine borers. I may do that tomorrow.

Yep, I'm trying some new techniques this year!

I'm looking forward to seeing you create these and hearing the report on how it worked.

I wonder if drizzling honey all over a stalk would deter the moth from laying.

I have no idea what other problems might come of that, but my mind can't stop thinking. There's got to be something cheap on hand that would make a moth go, "Hmmmm... Not putting my patookie on that!"

Well, friends, this is going to be a hard weekend. We will be shutting off the life support on my mom on Sunday. I've been strong this whole time but it's really hitting hard today. I know we all face this inevitability but it still sucks and hurts.

I've decided I'm going to build a nice heart-shaped raised flower bed for her. A pollinator garden. I'm also going to order this memorial and put it in the center.

I'm so sorry. ((((hugs))))

No, no, no. :old

My experience is that possum is greasy and has a strong flavor. Raccoon is very good, parboiled then simmered in bbq sauce. I mentioned my impressions of groundhog in an earlier post.

Now, fried rattlesnake tastes like chicken. LOL

Oh, you have the skills!!! 😎😊

I've killed many rattlesnakes in my life and I always regretted not having eaten one. What a waste.
