What did you do in the garden today?

Our winter was so mild that the kale I planted last fall and 3 plants of bib & leaf type lettuce are still growing. Some of the kale have been trying to go to seed, but I've been pulling them up and giving them to the chickens. I've also been enjoying kale & lettuce salads.

Today, I found a paltry hand full of carrots when I was preparing a bed for potatoes. So, I scrubbed them up. Hubby and I made a stir fry with kale, mountain spinach, and regular spinach all from the garden. Added some onion, pepperoni, garlic, and Sweet Bourbon Marinade, served it over Jasmine rice. I also had Mandarin oranges with mine. Super yummy lunch. It is so sweet to be harvesting food from the yarden so very early! All of the Mountain Spinach that was alive last fall has made a re-appearance. It is just slow getting going! It is on my recommended list for "must have in the yard for sustainable living." I'm hoping it is not an invasive! But, even if that is so, at least it is a tasty invasive!

Sounds delish! :drool

Yesterday we addend a trellis to our main garden as well as the grape vine.
Last week I soaked the cuttings I took from the plum tree in rooting hormone and they are still looking good.
And the peach tree cuttings I took I just stuck in one of my grow bags in the garden and they are looking very nice one is even sprouting new growth.

the peach tree cuttings are in the center with the center yellow cup.
And the water is growing frogs and toads.

Love it. that's a win/win situation!!!

Finally got the green beans and corn into the ground! Tomatoes, cucumbers and squash are having to wait.
Got suckered into doing a container garden out back of our ambulance barn. Said I could have 1 pot and grow what I want. Looked around and there are mainly tomatoes back there so I did green beans. Donating the veggies to the local senior center. Told me I had to donate 20% but told them I have 21 hills in my own garden so the center can just have them all! Its a big pot so I planted 5 hills in it of bush beans.
Planted some flowers today and my chickens had to come help by eating all of the worms I dug up. Happy birds!

What purpose do the yellow cups serve?
I never thought about rooting the cuttings from my peach tree. I'll have to try that the next time I prune the branches back. Do the cuttings do alright not being grafted to a "hardy" root stock?

I have a smallish wading pool in 1 of the chicken yards. I noticed the other day that it is full of frog/toad eggs. I have been trying to be careful not to add tap water from the hose in case the additives in the water hurt the eggs. I am also wondering if the chickens will eat any of the tadpoles when they emerge.

Hi Karenerwin I keep trying to get some cuttings to root I have had some grow roots and then I lose them for one reason or another.
I was told that they will produce fruit but not like the original tree.
But I am going to attempt to make a few trees that will produce plums and peaches.
This peach tree has only produced small fruit a couple times but the squirrels eat them all.
I also grafted some of the plum cuttings onto this peach tree. And that gave me the cuttings to attempt this. Wish me luck.;)

That doesn't sound right. A cutting is exactly identical to the original and should produce fruit identical to the original, that's how most fruit trees are grown these days, a cutting is either grafted onto a new rootstock or rooted, the rootstock should only control the size and rate of growth of the plant and shouldn't influence the fruit at all.
