What did you do in the garden today?

I found a way to use up my bottle of preserved minced garlic that I bought from my local supermarket. I haven't been using it because it doesn't taste as good as fresh garlic, it tastes different.

Anyway, I boiled and simmered 3 eggs in 4 cups of water with a TBS of vinegar for 7 minutes. The vinegar made the shell easier to come off. I diced the boiled egg and mixed it with 1TBS shoyu, 1/4tsp salt, 1tsp of peanut oil, 1TBS of smashed minced garlic and a handful of chopped green onion.

I made a hole in the middle of my 2 cups of cooked rice in a bowl and put the seasoned diced boiled egg in the hole and ate it for breakfast. I think smashing the minced garlic made a big difference.

I really enjoyed the taste of this simple dish and thought I should share it.

I remembered to buy chard at the store today. I had some in with my fried rice, so a bit sauted, and I liked it! I'm going to grow some next year, for sure. I think I'll try some in the green house over the winter, along with lettuce, spinach, and kale.

I tried it raw, and eh... not really a fan. I'm glad I like it this way. :)

I found out that Malabar Spinach has many health benefits, so I prefer to eat them. I remember one year, I planted a row of chard and traumatized everyone in my family. To this day my brother, sister and I prefer not to eat them, we ate too much of them that year. One plant lives a long time and keeps growing new leaves.

"As a tropical plant, Malabar spinach is extremely frost-sensitive; not only will it die in cold temperatures, it needs heat to grow. At daytime temperatures below 80 degrees F and nighttime temperatures below 60 degrees F, you won’t see much growth. The plant only starts thriving when the temperature exceeds 90 degrees F.
To harvest larger, more succulent leaves, wait until the plant has reached full maturity 70 to 85 days after planting.
You can plant the seeds in your garden after all danger of frost has passed, which is the recommended method in zone 7 and higher, or you can start the seeds indoors in cell flats six to eight weeks before your last frost date. With either method, plant the seeds one-quarter inch deep."

I might try growing this. Here in zone 5b (or maybe we're in 6a, because the map has changed), I don't know if I'll get much from it. But I like trying new things!

Thanks, @CNJ!

Sunny and 44 here atm.
I've spent the day poly sealing the bathroom door, staining window trim, and filling holes and large seams in the bathroom wall.
Tomorrow repeat and mudding joints and a quick trip to town for more compound so I can skim coat on Friday, seal on Saturday, and starting painting Sunday.
Slowly, so slowly. Tiny bites.
Thinking about tomato varieties for spring, but just barely.

My dh had a check-up today, so I took the day off from work. After his appointment I mailed packages, filled up the car with gas, picked up a few items.

When I got home I headed outside, to do something in the yard. It was about 50°F, good outside working weather.

I decided to tackle the southwest corner of our property, next to the woods. A tree fell over years ago, and the vines covered it up, until now.

From November, still green:

Slightly different angle, this afternoon, see the tangle of growth?

Two hours later...

The ground was covered with vines and briars, leaves and dead rotting wood. My neighbor's trees on the right side of the fence had vines and branches trailing low, catching in my hair as I worked. They're all trimmed back, now.

I kept finding small stumps, mostly by tripping over them. I managed to saw the majority of them down to the dirt, a couple that need more attention have been marked with red flags.

All the dead wood is now in the bottom of my new raised beds.

The tree in the corner of the yard is mostly rotten, may just see what a hatchet can accomplish...another day.

I love Swiss chard, but cooked

I've been buried in work for the past 3 days and unable to come up for air very much... This evening I finally got a few minutes to spend a little time in the garden. My lone cauliflower plant from the spring is really picking up a 2nd wind. Instead of one big head (which I harvested in spring), it's got probably 10 smaller offshoots from the main stem that are each developing on their own. I've been picking off leaves here and there and a few small florets for the bunny... He's loves them. Anyway, I've decided that next spring I will DEFINITELY leave my broccoli and cauliflower around after harvest so I can get a 2nd batch like this in the fall & early winter.

My cold frames were supposed to be here today. I need to go poke around and see if they ever showed up. I think I'll add some chard to the list of items going in one of those... So far I've not been successful at getting it to grow for me.

Watered either yesterday or the day before. Picked some lettuce and cilantro for the rabbits. Not much else. Peas aren't growing and neither are my carrots. 😭 I was hoping to get some veggies to try making a pot pie. Oh well not all hope is lost as I still have lettuce cilantro and spinach growing plus I have onions garlic and green onions and chives. My parsley is still alive also. Forgot to add potatoes are starting to sprout. French Fries 😛
