What did you do in the garden today?

Dirty rice with boudin and homegrown okra here. Made in the slow cooker so as to avoid heating up the house or the cook. I've been in the heat all day working on coop, putting run together. Built water and feed dispensers. Watered the garden from rainwater stores. Salivated over Ravencroft's auction of Ayam Cemani hatching eggs. HE says no, and I'd have to built a bator and I have no room for more and I still have 25 pullets to raise and sell about 15 of come fall. But those are such pretty birds and the price! :drool Phew! Glad that auction is over. Waiting for the ache of wanting those black-as-sin birds to pass. :th

I made pasta with herbs and onions from my garden in the sauce. :) Our garlic came out great this year. I used about 4 cloves in the sauce. The cloves are small but sweeter than store garlic. I like them very much. This is the first year we've gotten a half-way decent garlic crop. Ours is a wild variety.

Today in my garden I weeded the lettuce and kale beds, staked up a few tomatoes, pinched suckers on all the tomatoes and filled in one of the potato boxes another few inches. I also made some more stakes for the tomatoes and pulled the basil flowers (which went into our pasta tonight!). Last year I had a series of stakes with string running between them to make cage-like support. This year I am just tying the whole plants directly to the stakes. I'm hoping that it is more effective than last year which left me with nothing but a jungle!

I am also trying to make a calcium foliar spray for my plants. We get blossom end rot bad each year and treating the zucchini leaves with the calcium has helped in the past. I'm hoping that treating my tomatoes the same way will do the same thing for them!

Aren't auctions fun? For the moment anyway. Wife says I can get some of those black birds. Glad I didn't. Not much on size and poor layers from what I understand.

I've followed the AC thread and it appears some are working on improving the laying in their lines, getting decent results. But I'd want to get that black meat, maybe even get them a tad heavier. My chef buds would kill for that. I've had the melanistic/fibromelanistic meat a few times, and I do think it has a unique flavor. It's considered medicinal in some Asian traditions.

But all that is moot for me at this point in time. :hitLucky you to have the option!
