What did you do in the garden today?

Only gardening I did was water the big garden today. I accidentally knocked a green slicing tomato off the vine earlier so I may fry that up with lunch tomorrow. I did pick a small handful of pinto beans that looked dry. Ten pods yielded almost 1/4 cup of beans. Can I let them air dry the rest of the way @Acre4Me? I checked on the summer squash and I don’t think they will produce anything else. Just a hunch. The pumpkin plants are looking good so fingers crossed I’ll get something. It’s hovering between 89 and 90F now and for the last couple of hours. We got some thunder and lightening but no rain. Wah! I was hoping to work on prepping for Fall planting tomorrow but the weather is going to be more of today’s tropical feel. I’ve been hanging outside while my old chickens are having their dirt baths. I think my pores are clean enough now so it’s time to lock up the chickens and go hug Mr. Air Conditioner.
Yes! I put mine in a wire colander. That way they are passively drying if they need it. Then, after the busyness of the garden season is done, I put them in containers.

Did some inspecting today after finding over a dozen huge tomato worms last night. I swear they appear out of nowhere! Good news is after remving all those caterpillars and dusting the plants I didn’t find any more in the garden. The few plants in grow bags had tiny ones which are now taken care of. In another week or two I think I’ll be wading through a sea of ripe fruit.

Found a hoard of baby potato bugs, sprayed with neem but if they are still kicking tomorrow they’re getting the dust too.

Noticed some powdery mildew on some of the squash leaves so sprayed them with neem too. I’m thinking about pruning some of the old leaves and thinning runners to allow for more air flow. Not sure if it will really do much though. My mystery squash (supposed to me yellow zucchini) appears to be a type of acorn squash.

And lastly I mutilated the lettuce for the 3rd time. Got a 1gal bag full. Might have one more harvest from this batch but we’ll see.

Wow, it works for me. Bizarre. So sorry it did not work for you. 😞

Hmmm, makes me wonder...why are some folks more appetizing than others when it comes to mosquitoes?
Blood type...D for Delicious 😋?
My husband used to take a medication that as a side effect kept ticks and mosquitoes off of him. It was a blood thinner of some type. He has since had to switch to something else do to an allergic reaction but it was nice for him for all the years it worked!

Good morning gardeners. Another hot day today. I’m blowing the cooler air (70 degrees) in to air the house out a bit before closing the windows and turning on the AC. Thank you for the information on the beans @Acre4Me and congratulations on your and your DD’s success at the fair. I had planned on working on prepping the beds for Fall planting. I’m not sure how much I can get done with the heat. I don’t normally look at the heat index but I heard it was going to feel like 95 to 100F today. Wah! I know the feeling with the wildlife hanging out in your yard @Sueby. I have a colony of sparrows - the progeny of the nesting couples. There’s only one bunny this season and just these past few days there’s what appears to be an immature hawk camped out in the trees facing my backyard this past week. I named it Bob.

This is the best I could do with my phone. Here’s my pinto beans I picked yesterday.

There’s more than this.

And because it’s been a little hotter this summer, my sweet little Max has learned that sleeping on his back can be quite cooling. He tries to position himself so the breeze of the fan hits his belly. Lol!

G’morning gardeners. @Wee Farmer Sarah the sparrows here probably taste like chicken, they raid the feeders a lot. I heard on the news last night that July 2024 was our second hottest month since record keeping started. Second only to July 2023. I guess the loss of the Carolina jessamine and the melons croaking doesn’t make me feel so bad now. I saw lightning to the west when I turned on the water for the grass, but we didn’t get any rain. Maybe we will get a little, it’s moving this way. I’m just going to maintain what is still alive and hope my fall garden does better. Have a great day all.
