What did you do in the garden today?

Too hot to garden today. Day of rest. I will try to go out later. Evening is a favorite time in the garden. Hardly any mosquitoes. July was a wet month. I credit the fish tubs with keeping mosquito numbers down.
Must be the fish because I have 3 kinds of repellent on in the evening... they are worse then here

Anything is edible! I only eat wild game/fish (and recently chicken) so I've taken to exploring all the possible MI wild game edibles. I think the only thing I won't eat is a skunk.

Coon is plenty edible, just have to give it some extra attention. They are fatty little buggers so you gotta trim off as much fat as you can, taking care to remove the lymph nodes in the armpits and behind the knee area. Soaking in salted water for a couple days helps too. Meat is surprisingly good when prepped and cooked properly. It is on the "sweet" side as far as meat goes and will still be a bit greasy. I like to cook them like a roast in the Dutch oven or boil till tender then BBQ, this trapping season I intend to grind some burger and see how that is. If I don't like it then at least the chickens will eat it right? I think the hardest part about eating coon is getting over the fact it is a coon ;)
Have you tried squirrel?

Canned another batch of mixed garden things “end of garden” recipe from Ball canning book. The base is apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, ginger, NO added water. It will be interesting to try, not sure if I’ll like it. Used Zucchini, green beans, carrots, onions, red and green bell pepper.

The field peas (cow peas) have been good. One type is nearly done -not sure if they produce more (like green beans) after the first round. The second type is much easier to determine that it’s ready to pick due to a color change of the pods. The third type is just starting to produce. We’ve prepped them 2 ways. The second recipe was really good using a smoked ham hock.

The winter squash is producing well, except for one type that has produced a lot of leaves but only a couple squash among about 10 vines.
