What did you do in the garden today?

Just said adios to 10 family members here for the reunion (we have a small family). Everyone got party gifts of sweet corn, tomatoes and eggs. It was nice to just hang out, eat and B.S. all afternoon!

itsasmallfarm: "Our garden got attack by either a black bear or a wild pig. Ripped through the eletric fence and broke an apple tree branch."

Sorry to hear! Hopefully it's an isolated incident and not much damage. Our neighbor's dog ran a buck once through our electric fence. I think the dog got a good zap judging from the yelp. We've had more trouble from groundhogs chewing through the electric poultry mesh than anything else. Judging from all the chatter on this thread about groundhogs, they may get my vote for the biggest nusiance animal in the Midwest for getting into the garden. Of course, we don't have elk, wild pigs or lions & tigers & bears, so maybe we're lucky!

Watering, cleaned up the coop a bit. Stopped to watch the bees go flower to flower in the weeds. Going for compost to prep for the crepe myrtles and get some groceries.
Plants should be delivered today.

Question about greenhouse placement...obviously it needs to be in the sun, but would a little afternoon shade hurt? I expect it'll get darn hot in there because there's no window or any way to vent the thing :he
Should I cut a window? Make a vent in the top? Both? Neither?

Thanks guys!
I'm certainly no expert, but can offer our personal experience. Hubs put up two greenhouses 4-5 years ago - one in full sun, one with partial shade. As expected, the one in full sun gets REALLY hot, and the one in partial shade not as bad. He has windows on both ends, and fans on the one in full sun (remember, if you want polinators to get at your plants, they have to have a way to get inside! :)). We've found that tomatoes & peppers love the full-on sun, with its very hot temps (as long as you keep things well watered). Most other plants seem to actually prefer the partial shade of the other greenhouse, and I myself just about melt when in the full-sun greenhouse. When I have to work in there, I do it in the early morning before it gets too hot!

My wife has been wanting a greenhouse and I want all the starter racks and plants out of the basement, so guess what...another project in the works. Our experience with past greenhouses is that full sun greenhouses are not as versitile and are as hot as Death Valley in July. We have a spot by the garden with a frost-free hose bib nearby and the option for electric that gets full sun 10-2 and diffuse light the rest of the time. I think this will work for an 8x10 shed. I plan on having a pop-up skylight to let out excess heat when needed. I'll could put in a fan exhaust option as well. We have a friend who is demo-ing their greenhouse to build a porch and I am hoping to scavenge some of that to use in our construction. I scavenged a utility sink last year and am putting that in the plan as well. I'm probably overthinking this, but I like a good project.:) Will post pics when (and if) it happens.
