What did you do in the garden today?

The first seeds are planted! Indoors of course, but gardening nonetheless. DD and DS helped me plant trays of tomatoes (Super Beef, Black Cherry, and Roma), peppers (Carnival Bell and Jalapeno), and a 10-pack of marigolds. 150 starter cells in total, and that's just the start. Might be less variety of plants this year, but plenty of quantity of the plants we like most.

Snow is melting. Checked the garlic and asparagus, they are not popping above the soil just yet. Crocuses are popping up out front in our flower bed. Daffodils may be popping up under the leaf litter too.

Chickens enjoyed sun bathing today in the 50+ degree weather. Hoping for eggs soon. None just yet.

G’morning gardeners. I watered this morning and saw more Armenian cucumbers have sprouted and the corn is coming up, plus I saw an onion sprout peeking through too. Most of the cauliflower and broccoli are nearly a foot tall now. I see a lot of bird activity in the luffa and where I planted the Roselle. This weekend I’m planting again and will put in some row cover material to stop all that. There’s a hook billed thresher that hangs out in our yard a lot and it runs around cleaning all the divots between concrete pads so I’m sure it’s responsible for the mess. It’s a beautiful morning here, I can wear shorts and a tank top outside already. Temps are high 80’s during the day, but are forecast to be more seasonal next week.

Yesterday was 51° and today we had sleet and have mid 30s. So it goes in February in Michigan.

I'm actually glad we don't have a big stretch of warm weather coming. Then I get antsy, well, antsier! for spring and things bud out before they should.

The garden is still white. That's ok. The farm field is greening up -- it's winter rye -- and the deer are pawing up the leaves under the trees.

No heating mat, no supplemental lighting. First peppers came up in two weeks.

I do the same for everything I plant, acclimating the seeds to not need special care.

I have half my packet of pea seeds soaking in water, and got the raised bed prepped for planting. I'll put the seeds in the ground this afternoon.

I'm hardening off the leaf lettuce and watercress plants for the next couple days, then they'll go into the garden too.

Some of my pepper plants are close to 6 inches tall now. I'm sure they'll need repotted again since they won't go into the garden for at least another 6 weeks.

I'm not planting my tomato seeds until early to mid April. They'll go into the garden late May or early June depending on the soil temperature.
