What did you do in the garden today?

I picked up a half load of garden soil to top off my raised beds. In the process of checking them all over, I decided to tackle the strawberry barrels (see below). The soil level had dropped over a foot and the strawberries in the top section were WAY overcrowded. Not sure if the soil is washing out of the holes or just compacted. I used netting on the inside to keep the soil from coming out so I'm not sure.

Anyway, I dug up all the strawberry crowns in the top and refilled the soil back to the rim. I replanted about 5 - 8 strawberries in the top of each barrel. That left nearly FIFTY crowns with no home. 😂

Sooooo... I made the impromptu decision to build a 2x4 frame (8 ft x 42") with an A-frame chicken wire cover to keep the chickens, goats, and birds out. I think I am going to make it a hugelkultur bed with some pine tree logs in the center and then soil mounded on top... Should be fully finished tomorrow. 🤞

Those bright blue barrels look really cool against the greenery!

I planted an herb garden around my coop for my chickens. I have a black thumb so not sure how this will go😂

I have one! Also a menthol one, but it's not congestion. It's swollen cell walls due to actual chunks of allergens getting breathed up into my sinus. I have to get them OUT to stop the allergic over-reaction.

We got a big line of storms today. I brought my newly sprouted seedlings into the garage to keep them from getting chucked by the high winds or drowned in the rain. After it passed, the sun came out... I took the seedlings back outside.

Fast forward several hours... It's now dark outside. DH and I are watching the news and suddenly I hear a downpour hit the roof like it's raining buckets. :barnie

Came out of nowhere... After it's over I'm going to have to dump the excess water out of the seed trays. 🙄

Today I caved and planted both the bush bean varieties I grabbed (the Calypso and the Iroquois Cornbread) in some moderately-sized pots. Given that outdoor gardening weather is still several weeks away for me they will likely remain inside for most/all of their grow time.

The Cornbread is supposed to get long enough to need trellising (~4 feet) so if it works out I’m going to need to reserve some table space to keep it out of range of the cat while still keeping it in range of a grow light. A problem for another day.

As an aside, the beans themselves are gorgeous:

The Calypso apparently only get around 18 inches so the big danger there is getting ’Love in Paradise’ stuck in my head every time I look at the pot. 😝

(The Turkey Craw is apparently a pole bean with a length to rival my usual Trail of Tears beans so they are just going to have to wait.)

Also finally planted some lemongrass seeds! They also went in a pot, but they were always destined to stay inside since they’re tender perennials.
