What did you do in the garden today?

Yes, I start the seeds indoors, and I've planted them outside after only a couple weeks. They handle cool/cold weather really well too. I would try direct seeding but with slugs and earwigs in the garden I think setting out started plants gives them a better chance of survival.

It's actually Baby Choi I'm growing, and they're some of the fastest growing things I've planted in the garden. But they're quick to bolt when the temperature gets warm outside, or maybe it has to do with the length of daylight.

It is day length that triggers bolting. If planted after the summer solstice when days are getting shorter, they will not bolt. Same with turnips. The old saying for planting turnips is 25th of July wet or dry.

I learned that first hand last summer. My spring planted chard did diddly piddly. Then I read about day length, and planted some at the end of July. Bingo! I had lots of chard!

Today, tomorrow, and Sunday look to be 50s-60s, with some sunshine. It will definitely be a gardening weekend!

I have a lot of area to prepare for planting. Weeding, moving piles of autumn leaves, and some other general clean up.

I didn't sleep well last night (don't know why), but I bet after I spend hours in the garden, I'll sleep well tonight! :)

Hard frost advisories for a few mornings… the apricots had already bloomed, so not sure if we will get any, but I did see a couple late blooms on the tree the morning after the hard freeze.

Remaining fruit trees are in various stages of waking up. Looks like the Asian pears and peaches will be next to flower. And, one of the plum trees looks to possibly have flower buds. If so, it will be the first time to flower.

Wet, wet, wet. Floods last week. Apparently, a few of our local parks flooded worse than is typical. One of them, comprising of a parking lot and 4 baseball diamonds with fencing and yellow tubing along top of fencing, has never ever had water in it in the years we’ve lived here. When the river floods in that area, it fills up the large park on the other side and other farm fields that are lower. Well, that baseball diamond park had water up to the yellow fence toppers, parking lot completely flooded too. We’ve had more rain since, but not excessive.

Need to up-pot the tomatoes, and thin the peppers as needed. Happily the peppers all look great in this new seeding mix.

Peas are popping up, so I’ll need to add the plastic fencing for them to climb.

Last week we had 5 broody hens! We put them in a separate pen with only one roost bar -they are near, but not next to, the flock. This stresses them enough that they stop being broody. We waited until they laid eggs then put them back with the flock. Well, except one broody girl. She is now alone in that pen bc it is her third visit there in the past 5-6 weeks, that girl wants to be a mom! So, she will stay until she lays. I need to give her a friend though and forgot to pluck one off the coop roost last night to put in there.

Cute goat pic. They turned 1 yo last week! Wether named Maverick is in front, sticking out his tongue. Doe named Annie (short for Anastasia) is behind.

Wow, seeing your work bring me to shame. ❤️ I better get moving with my plants
No need to rush! I only planted yesterday because of the soil temperature hitting 70° and my lilac is blooming. I'm also sick of spending 10 minutes moving plants every morning and evening. If they are in the ground I don't have to move them. 🤣

Also I'm not making much money right now because the tariffs, and fear of tariffs, have basically stopped all of our clients projects. So I'm almost out of a job for the time being. No work means more time in the yard and working on the house. And volunteering at my son's school. So there's that but dang.

I hope growing your vegetable garden and seeing them grow bring you joy and peace. That what I feel whenever I spend time in the garden with my chickens.

After seeing photos of your garden so plentiful, I moved my passion fruit plants and helped them climb up the fence. More will be done tomorrow.

Your goats super cute, I think Maverick is making fun of you by sticking his tongue out.😄
