What did you do in the garden today?

I definitely over did it yesterday. Today I rested so hopefully tomorrow I can get back to work. My shoulders were really achy from all the lifting of the bags of dirt and digging compost. The weather wasn’t all that great either today. I did snap a photo of the daffodils that were buried under the previous owners grass clippings dump pile. I love daffodils.

After work I started a few more seeds indoors and made a huge mess pulling a full tray off the wire shelf to plant out. I had it sitting since yesterday to absorb water into the potting mix. I didn't notice there was still water in the tray and it all slid forward when I pulled the tray out. Muddy water and some of the pots onto the floor! I put away the seed starting things and decided to play with the baby chicks instead :). I'll get more done tomorrow.

Some of my tomato plants I started a couple weeks ago are big time leggy and bigger than expected. No idea why, I've done the same as always and never had this trouble. I think they'll be ok it was just a surprise to see these giant plants (all sorts of varieties) so soon. I'll figure out if they need intervention and up potting this weekend.

Today I started prepping the potato bed. I got sidetracked. That's ok.

I have an idea for when I plant the potatoes. I'm going to mark each spot with a tomato cage. I have gobs of them. The plant can grow up through/around the tomato cage. I will know where I've planted them, so I can plant onions around them.

When the plants die back, I'm often not ready to dig them; lots of other garden things going on then, and they can sit in the ground and wait for me. Sometimes, I can't find where I planted them, because the plants die and get lost in the mulch.

I think when I dig them, I'll put the cages back so I know where I might find some volunteer potato plants. Last year, instead of rows of potato plants, I had patches of potato plants. Volunteers came up in between the rows and made it difficult to weed.

Puttered around outside. Did a few sweet cherry grafts and Shiro plum grafts. They were Shiro prunings from when I planted my new tree. Looks like 4 rainy days ahead. Saw my test results. As suspected, I am in AFIB. Now to see what the doctor says. I suspect another ablation procedure. Four years since the last one.

If you don't already know you can re-pot the tomatoes as deep as you want so they're no longer leggy in the new pots. The tomato stems will send out more roots when buried and supposedly make the plants stronger.

Got all the grass clippings gathered out of the yard and next to the raised beds. I was going to weed and mulch today but ended up running the weed eater for over an hour. And baked bread. And cooked beans. Washed dishes. Got 4 eggs from the chickens, and figured out which of the hens laid the giant lash egg a couple days ago. She's feeling poorly and won't be around much longer, I'm afraid. :(

I have voles in my raised beds but they don't do much damage to my garden plants. I just accept the damage they do in return for the soil aeration and fertilizing services they provide.
One year, pretty sure it was voles, we had them digging all kinds of holes in the raised beds with peppers. The peppers didn’t like their roots quite so aerated, so they didn’t produce a whole lot. We did buy Vole-X “poison” and that seemed to help. We had voles in our strawberry bed, but now we plant garlic in the strawberry bed, among the strawberry plants, and no more voles!

I left them alone the year I planted winter wheat, at harvest time there were holes every 3 or 4 inches apart throughout the entire bed. 4' x16' totally covered with hole! Never again! I eradicate them quickly.

Oh my goodness, I am going to be planting a lot of garlic this fall! Thanks for the tip that voles don't like garlic!
