What did you do in the garden today?

Going to build a hanging strawberry planter today. I've seen them made out of gutter sections but not sure I have the money to buy one today so I'm going to root around to see what I can come up with. Looking forward to keeping them out of the reach of roley poley bugs.

I would love to see that erinszoo. I was just thinking of growing some stuff in a pallet that we have. I haven't decided what though. Anyone have experience with vertical pallet gardening?

I'm also dreaming of window boxes for the back porch. I wanted to do pretty stuff and edible/useable stuff. Any tips?

The one thing about planting in gutters or pallets or anything shallow is that you can only plant vegies that have shallow root systems ... so lettuce, strawberries, onions, and such. If your window boxes are a little deeper, like 10 to 12 inches you can grow pretty much anything you want but bigger veggies will take more water. Some people plant in window boxes, they plant each plant in a container and then put the containers in the box that way each kind of plant can have the water it needs without flooding other plants. I wish I had windows that I could put boxes on because I love how they look but my front windows are on a porch on the north, one side is the driveway and only gets morning sun, the other side is in shade day round, and the back I already have garden beds under. I'll post pics when I get my strawberry gutters done. I didn't get them done today because we had to move baby turkeys around and build a new pen in the coop for them.

Erinszoo, you're just full of great tips and ideas! Thanks!

My ripped up seedlings are bouncing back! I'm so happy!

I'm starting lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers this weekend. Woo hoo!

I'm trying to con my hubby into making me some more seed trays and a cold frame.

Made the decision to build a big raised bed in the old driveway (we can't use it because the neighbors decided to build a fence and block our access ... long story) in which to plant my large rambling winter squash. It will get morning sun and be shaded from the worst of the heat and sun in the late afternoon plus I could build a shade cloth over it as well AND the plants wouldn't take up all my space for growing other things! That's the plan anyway ...

This will be my first garden. I planted the peas today that I had started.
Yay. Happy gardening.

Took down the fence around the summer garden. No rain lately, water tank getting low, everything looking a bit sad in there so now the girls are having a great time demolishing it.

(in Australia so the seasons are different to most of you, heading to autumn)
