The one thing about planting in gutters or pallets or anything shallow is that you can only plant vegies that have shallow root systems ... so lettuce, strawberries, onions, and such. If your window boxes are a little deeper, like 10 to 12 inches you can grow pretty much anything you want but bigger veggies will take more water. Some people plant in window boxes, they plant each plant in a container and then put the containers in the box that way each kind of plant can have the water it needs without flooding other plants. I wish I had windows that I could put boxes on because I love how they look but my front windows are on a porch on the north, one side is the driveway and only gets morning sun, the other side is in shade day round, and the back I already have garden beds under. I'll post pics when I get my strawberry gutters done. I didn't get them done today because we had to move baby turkeys around and build a new pen in the coop for them.
