What did you do in the garden today?

Picked up some more pear scion wood from MIL today. One particularly nice water sprout of Bartlett. Now, I'm on the fence re: grafting Seckel or the Bartlett to my seedling pear. The Fedco tree sale is May 9. Trees are just now breaking dormancy. Would it be too late to graft a tree from that sale with the wood I have stored in the fridge???

Did the classic rookie mistake of taking my seedlings outside so they could get some warmth and sun....and didn't remove the tops of the trays. Yep, what seedlings I did have are fried and shriveled and another of the trays got knocked of the porch railing by a chicken, dumped all over the floor. Then I got them all restored and replanted and put that cover right back on....what few seedlings that were in that tray are now withered, white little strings.

Mama said there'd be days like this......

Guess I'll be getting things out into the garden late, if I can at all.

That stinks. We all make those mistakes, I did that with some flowers last month.

Yep, I can't tell you how many trays of seedlings I've carefully nurtured. Then a day of extra business, when I just can't get to them to water at the correct time... or too long in the sun... it doesn't take much to kill the little buggers. Oh, and the cat LOVES to kill seedlings. He just can't resist a tray of tomatoes and peppers that are just getting some nice size. They apparently make a nice soft bed. Or... finally get them transplanted into the garden, and they mysteriously wither up and die. Understandable when a cut worm gets them, but when it's without cause. That is maddening. Bee, I know it's just not the same, but you can buy just about anything as a seedling now. Even corn!

I know...but I was trying a few new varieties this year that I wouldn't find around here and the celery most certainly can't be bought. I'll replant tonight and just pray they get some good size on them by the end of May. I got plants out late last year and they did just fine, so I'm thinking I'll be doing the same again this year. Thanks for the sympathy...it helps a lot when one has messed up royally and can't take back the mistake.

I've done just about everything wrong today...it's just been one of those days. Now I need to have a huge pity party for myself, cry and pray some more, eat some chocolate and read a good book. Tomorrow will look better....I'm just sure of it.

Yesterday, when I was dumping bags of leaves in the garden, I got an unexpected present! I found a bit of a plant that was nice and pink, about 2" long at it's largest "nub". It was still attached to the old leaves from last year, so, I was able to identify it as a peony. It had 2 eyes. So, instead of planting it somewhere where the chickens or Maggie could dig it up and destroy it, I potted it up. Can't wait to see what color it is... if it survives! Amazing that it didn't freeze, laying in that bag all winter. Speaks well to God's plan of using mulch to preserve plants for the following year! My Amaryllis decided to bloom yesterday, also! I paid 50 cents for that bulb 3 years ago, and have had 3 seasons of stunning blossoms. It's pink and white splashed. It has a baby that eventually should be moved to an other pot.

I haven't had a bad seedling day YET this year. However, the season is still young! Yes, our gardens do nurture us, in more ways than that which goes into our mouth. I am in my glory today, hauling mulch, have a little peep in the kitchen.
