What did you do in the garden today?

I can empathize about the birds. The squirrels in my neighborhood are the size of small house cats, it seems like. And they're just obnoxious, tearing and digging things up. If I had a firearm, I'd never have to buy meat! Although the houses are too close together to shoot any too. Darn it! I'd be eating squirrel and replacing Windows.

Same here and it was needed here as well, if for nothing more than the wet the seeds I've planted since last rain. I had wet them but there's nothing like a good, soaking rain to get seeds started....and that will be followed by hot and humid weather today, so they should just spring from the ground with a shout!

Looking forward to some rain this afternoon and tomorrow. Harvested a few blueberries and a cherry tomato. Did usual weeding and bug massacre. Not much today, but still lovely to be out there given I am recovering from a shoulder surgery.

Not raining today, at least so far. I'll be busy clearing out the garage. I did find some pea seeds and some unidenfiables, so just threw them in.

Spent the day puttering, my favorite kind of gardening. Planted some Swiss chard, romaine, and peas. It's late for peas and lettuce, but I thought I'd try it since my beds do get some shade. Divided/repotted a variegated ginger, and repotted some house plants and basil. Made a dust bath for the girls with sand, ashes, and DE. Mid-80s here again today.

Cooking squirrel is on my bucket list. How do you prepare it? We have a lot of big gray squirrels here. Almost had one last summer that was brazen enough to come in the chicken run, and get stuck.

has started cooling down now at 5 PM, and it's 81. Must have been a scorcher today. Babies were hot. Cukes are sprouting like crazy now. Saw my first pole bean sprout. Still need to plant a lot of the garden.

My sister cooks fish with a bit of dill on it and love it. I use it to make pickles and for salads also.

I feel ya on the squirrels we have so many I told my Dh he had to do something about them since the dogs just let them run wild!

Question for you veteran tomato people. I have two strains of tomato (Better Boy & Cherokee Purple) that are splitting on the vine and rotting without ripening. I've not had these problems with tomatoes bread for southern climates like Arkansas Traveler & Creole. Romas are growing/ripening. It's just these two.

Can someone tell me why this is happening? Can I fix it or are those plants done for the year?

Splitting is usually caused by rain near ripening time . Rapid expansion of the tomato . Not every variety responds the same . So some may split and others will not be affected .
