What did you do in the garden today?

My understanding is that it's a crap shoot planting anything from the grocer b/c it's often sprayed with some chemical to keep stuff from sprouting. (White and sweet potatoes, and perhaps onions/garlic and such.) So, even if stuff does sprout, it won't grow well b/c of the retardant effects of that chemical.

That's why we got organic, it usaully doesn't have so many Chems.

Tough tough fall gardening this year. My first set of tomato plants from seed were all broken/killed by tropical storm rains for 2 days. I bought plants from my local feed store only to watch them get beat up by more rain this week. I'm beginning to think I'm not going to get a fall tomato this year. My Jalapeno peppers are going strong with loads of blossoms but the habanero and bell peppers are getting beat up pretty bad by the storms too.

Staying hopeful.

As our gardening season wraps up here in the north the deer seem to ramp as well. 15 tomato plants destroyed...Ill see what if any can be salvaged. Not a single branch broken on the pumpkins though...

I have to say I'm really pleased with the elephant garlic I got from Bakers Creek last year!
That's only 9 of the 13 cloves I started with.
400

Next to a Granny Smith apple.

I now have over 40 cloves, from just 9 of 13 (I left 4 in the ground.)
400

My biggest monster clove.

Yesterday, I started planting the green house. It was super hot in there, but weather supposed to start cooling off starting this weekend. Planted some lettuce seedlings that were started several weeks ago. also some dill seed. Saving room for some thyme plants, kale seedlings, spinach, oregano, lemon balm, mint, garlic. Have a tomato plant that is now 2' tall, and an other one that needs to be transplanted, same size. All of the lettuce seedlings are looking great today.

I bought a mixed batch of 50 mail order day lilies with the intention of planting them on a steep slope that is almost impossible to mow safely. Well, after a few attempts at digging in hard pan, I decided to plant the day lilies in various other spots, until I can terrace that slope! I planted 25 today! Should have some nice splashes of color to look at next summer, while I'm stacking stone.

The weeds won the battle in my garden this year.

I was gone for almost a week at the county fair. Then got hit with an early frost which finished off my above ground crops. The onions and potatoes did awesome though. Used all of my dill in making my hot dill pickles.

I keep looking at the bulbs in the store but I know I need to make a nice bed for them and dig up my older bulbs first.

Lazy gardener it sounds like you and Garden nut and Dan are all having so much fun!

I told my dh that I was to make my raised bed a cold frame this year. We have the scrap wood and a pile of old windows.
I mainly want to protect my baby pomegranate trees and elderberry bushes. They are just so small.

We got the blueberries in a half barrel since they will not grow in our black belt prarie mix of clay soil.
I added a good bit of peat moss in the potting soil. Just not sure where to put it yet. lol
