What did you do in the garden today?

We finally have warm weather and sunshine. :weeAnd black flies.:hit I've been: pulling poison ivy by hand, planting: Cornelian Cherries, cranberries, Wine Cap mushrooms, Peach tree. Trenching sod from around the CP garden fence. Cutting down a bunch of trees to make room for the Cherry trees. Have Fortex bean seed soaked and starting to sprout. Will plant those today. Need to dig up some Day Lilies to save them from the wrath of hubby's mower. Tons of gardening and yardening to do. Have plum, apricot, june berry blossoms, and even a couple of apple blossoms in the orchard.

DH had some time and he and his worker came by and removed my leaf mountain so I can plant my Hopi corn. :yesss:

The cottonwood leaves are alkaline and so is our soil, so I can only put a small amount in the compost at a time. Mowed the lawn earlier this week and put a thin layer on the garden and the rest in the compost. Things are moving around here!

I grafted a couple of cuttings off my dwarf plum tree onto my peach tree in the small orchard. I'm hoping that way we can at least get a few plums before the squirrels eat them all. I also took a pic of my elderberries from before I planted them in the new garden and today. They love the garden.

Is that a snake in the top right of the second photo??

Actually starting the garden today. All our seedlings are ready to go in. A little nervous that I'm too rich (soil wise) as I have quite a bit of compost and manure in the garden this year. Historically I've burned a few plants that eventually came back but everything was typically solid producers once they got used to the richness of the soil. All your basics- tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, zucchini, cukes, onion, loose leaf lettuce, winter squash and musk melon. Time will tell...

Today, I found a paltry hand full of carrots when I was preparing a bed for potatoes. So, I scrubbed them up. Hubby and I made a stir fry with kale, mountain spinach, and regular spinach all from the garden. Added some onion, pepperoni, garlic, and Sweet Bourbon Marinade, served it over Jasmine rice. I also had Mandarin oranges with mine. Super yummy lunch. It is so sweet to be harvesting food from the yarden so very early! All of the Mountain Spinach that was alive last fall has made a re-appearance. It is just slow getting going! It is on my recommended list for "must have in the yard for sustainable living." I'm hoping it is not an invasive! But, even if that is so, at least it is a tasty invasive!

I have this one lettuce that is absolutely gorgeous, I think it's an Anuenue which were bred in Hawaii and are supposed to be heat resistant, I suppose it is cause it's been in the 80 and 90s for nearly three month now. I plan on letting it go to seed to see how long it will take the heat and saving the seed for next year. Who knew I could have fresh lettuce in mid may. I certainly didn't.

I pulled weeds, collected a few grubs ( that my chickens were happy to get), tied up my tomato plants, thinned out some kale (also for the chickens), planted some garlic leftover from last Fall ( not expecting anything to grow, but, you never know) & planted some asparagus roots. I had the exact opposite problem, mine were very dry and I am not really expecting great things from them. I left the package on the kitchen counter too long. I do have an active bed of asparagus, I was just trying to "fill in" the other half of the bed. I also dug up some of the mint that has spread like crazy because when I planted it years ago I didn't know how well it spread!! Then a friend's husband came and tilled my garden and spread the mint everywhere. I've been battling it ever since. I like to plant it around the perimeter of the chicken yard because I read somewhere, probably a thread here on BYC, that some predators don't like to cross a mint border.
