What did you do in the garden today?

This evening, I pulled out the spent pea vines. The birds are having a blast pawing through them, looking for peas. Harvested the garlic, most of it. The jury is in. It is definitely better to pull the scapes. Some of those garlic heads are almost as big as my fist. So, I will be planting traditionally now, and only let the scapes mature if I intend to do a massive planting. Those bulbils are still great for chicken treats and to plant in the orchard around the trees.

Have 2 short rows spaded up and ready to plant to lettuce and kale.

Do you plant your lettuce and Kayle directly into the soil or do you start plants and then plants the babies?

Yes, I can. And if I don't turn them all into jam, I just might make a raspberry pie. The thing is: if I make a raspberry pie, it's gone in a day or two. But, if I make jam, I get a mouth full of summer every single morning to start my day with a smile. I make my jam with Pomona's pectin, so I get to make it just as tart as I want, and only as sweet as I want. It's heaven in a jar.

Dang! Poetry in the garden you can send some of that raspberry jam my way if you want ha ha

Pen, do you have to replant those regularly or do they spread? I had some in TN and they did ok but they did not seem to spread.

If they don't spread I'm planing on slipping them.
Edit. I only have 4 new ones so I'm not sure if they will spread or not.

We cut down several ash trees today that died from the Emerald Ash Borer. Ran the branches through the chipper for garden mulch and split the rest for firewood. We got about 4" of hardwood mulch for the garden...beats weeding!

Anyone in the southwest have experience with a chaste tree? Or suggestions for heat/drought tolerant large bushes/small trees?

Found that one of my rose bushes didn't make it, kinda bummed. I need a large bush/small tree to shade a brick wall and side of the coop, but it's also near a sidewalk. I also want low maintenance. I know, how about the moon too right?

I don't know about plants for your climate but my rose bush is sure having a hard time getting established with jap beetles chewing it to bits. Sorry yours perished. They are not cheap these days.

I thought that since the wild ones are always starting where the branch tips lay in dirt I'd try that.
Next year sometime as they are only 8 inches tall right now. Just got them in the mail a month ago they have doubled in height. Curious to see if they really like pine needles.

How about the Crepe Mrytle tree. There are bush forms of it but the tree can be kept small by cutting it off at six to eight feet tall every year. The blooms come on new growth so they will still bloom if pruned. Bush form is probably what you are looking for. Also I've never seen the deer pay any attention to them. If they do the trees far outgrow what they eat. Tree form can get 30' if not trimmed. They come in a wide range of colors. Our temps here range from 114 to 26 for the summer and winter. Low humidity.
