What did you do in the garden today?

Yesterday, I started ripping out the flower bed at the west end of the house. Gave a WB full of weeds to the chooks. Salvaged some yellow raspberries to transplant into the orchard. Chickens helped. Nellie was underfoot almost the whole time I was working, with her entourage coming and going. Do you know how hard it is to dig without cutting off chicken toes? Do you know how hard it is to pitch a rock without hitting a chicken? Then... dog had to get in on the act. She's working on learning to leave the birds alone. But, she was truly intrigued by Nellie's actions. She stood there watching a bit, then decided that if Nellie was digging in the soft soil, there must be something good there. Did you know that a dog can create more havoc in a garden than even a determined chicken???? If only she'd do her digging where it was needed, instead of at the edge, and flinging the soil onto the lawn! When that bed is renewed, it will be mulched with cardboard followed by a nice layer of wood chips, and protected by deer netting.

Harvesting seeds now: many kinds of lettuce, Dill, cumin, calendula, Swiss Chard, Flat Leaf Italian Parsley.

I have a single ripe Habanero. Enough Jalapenos to make my year's worth of salsa.

Lol! Every time I've fired up my big backhoe the chooks come running like it's a dinner bell full of worms. I have to watch out for them they can be annoying. Lol.
Which reminds me how close to winter we are. Have to finish digging and leveling behind the garage. Would like to get a few goats back there next spring. Birds will get some pickings there, my huge pile of dirt is six foot taller with weeds right now, bet it's loaded with worms.

Wild turkeys are heck in gardens as well.
