What did you do in the garden today?

It's raining and chilly, but not freezing here. I haven't done anything in the garden today but check on everything I've got outside. So far in the garden I have planted snap peas, carrots, beets, and broccoli. Everything but the broccoli has emerged, but I just put those seeds in yesterday.

My window boxes of lettuce and spinach are emerged and overplanted, but that's ok. I plan to eat a lot of baby greens. My tomatoes and pepper seedlings are getting big. I actually had some confusion over one of my pots, because one seedling didn't match the rest. I didn't even think it was a tomato for a couple of days. Turns out I got a potato leaf tomato seed mixed in the seed packet. I did not know that was a thing.

I really like to grow eggplant, just because it's a pretty plant with beautiful flowers. Don't like the skin either, so I always either peel it or grow ones with very thin skins (Casper, Listada di Gandia). And for me, roasting it is the key--makes a huge difference in texture. Once that's done, it will soak up any kind of sauce/marinade you want. I put the roasted cubes in during the last phase of a thai curry, or bread and flash fry for eggplant parm.

A friend gave me a couple of kohlrabi plants last spring. Cool-looking aliens, but I didn't really know what to do with it. Ate it raw like carrot sticks, and it was kinda blah. Still liked how it looked though.

I'm going to grow a bit of okra this year, first time ever. I'm not a fan, though I found out this winter that picked okra is actually tasty. We'll see.
Make sure you plant okra away from anything that needs a lot of sun. It makes a tremendous canopy. Last year ours got so tall (nearly 7ft), we had trouble harvesting, so this year I'm trying a dwarf variety.

Heh--potato leaf tomatoes always surprise me, too! Hadn't realized there would be a stray in a pack. Kinda like the fry you sometimes find in the onion rings. :)

Today is supposed to be the last cold-ish night. Not freezing, but still 40s. After that, it's looking good for the rest of the week. It would be super helpful if I could get all of my starts transplanted before we leave town. I don't want my creature keepers to have to keep track of the plants, as well.

Kohlrabi , peeled ,boiled and a tad of butter. Yum.

Okie-dokie. On further inspection of my tomato seedlings and reading, it appears to be not a root rot issue, but a damping off issue that could lead to rot. I looked again and noticed the withering at the stem base is not brown, but green, while the main stems and undersides of the leaves are purplish. So, I guess I just need to hold off on giving them much water until I get them into the garden, where they can grow more roots on the stems and get some phosphorus. This all so much more technical than I had expected. Lol!

Got the raised beds finished and put up 2 of the arched trellises. Also started on the muscadine arbor. Hope to finish it this next week.
