What did you do in the garden today?

Yep. He didn't even know that chickens were legal when I moved in. I called him to talk about the fact that I was getting them - trying to play nice, ya know? - and he was like "Chickens are illegal and we'll have to remove them from your property". And then I told him I was staring right at the ordinances listed online and updated that year and that they weren't and I was getting them, and basically that they could try to remove them over my lawyers cold dead hands.
I don't know if the same guy still works there, but they're not a good or useful group anyhow. The ACOs do nothing about loose animals that aren't dogs. They won't catch stray cats that poop in your gardens or harass your animals, they won't even TNR them if they're not fixed, even though letting your cat off your own property is illegal. I've showed off the extra-bold deer the past winter if you recall, we are expected to just live with them even if they are bucks in rut and even though they cause regular car accidents. We are also expected to live with and do our "due vigilance" to protect kids, cats and small dogs from the local coyotes. I suspect that if a bear showed up they would call the county animal control and make them deal with it. :p

On the other hand, they're also super useless about enforcing the stupid laws on the books, so it's not like they're just selectively bad to harass people... Like there used to be a law on the books that you couldn't own non-cat-and-dog animals in your home. Like pet rabbits were illegal with the way the law was phrased, but it was never enforced. And there's a law on the books that dogs can't be left outdoors under any circumstances for more than 3 hours at a time. Super unenforceable and also not enforced, people leave their dogs on tie outs or in fenced lawns all day long with nobody snooping or writing up fines.

So the TL;DR is that the groundhog problem is mine to solve... But humanely because animal cruelty laws ARE enforced.
Don’t feel bad the ACO Don’t feel bad the ACO is terrible here. My daughter was home and called me and said there was seven dogs in a pack in our yard. Mostly hounds but two labs. No tracking collars on any of them. Actually only two of them had a collar. No tags one had a red collar and one had an orange. My daughter went outside to check where the goats were and the dogs growled at her. So she called me and I called animal control and my mother-in-law went over there to help. When animal control got there he saw that one dog had an orange collar and said there’s hunting dogs and there’s nothing he can do about it. My mother-in-law had to actually ask him can you at least get the two that are growling at my daughter out of the goat pen. So I guess it’s OK to just have dogs randomly come in your yard. Only one of them had an orange collar no tracking collars and two of them were labs so I don’t suspect they were all hunting dogs anyway. My daughter usually lets the chickens out about an hour before that thank goodness that day she forgot. Wasn’t too worried about my goats they don’t put up with any crap from any dogs

It’s a shame that it’s like that. Because the house at the top of my dirt road has two young children that are constantly playing outside. I’m almost happier they rolled up in my yard then theirs. My mother-in-law asked the ACO office or what would’ve happened if those dogs had attacked my daughter or killed my chickens or hurt my goats and he shrugged his shoulders and said if that happens you would have to find the owner and take it up with them and then law-enforcement can get involved. So we have to wait till something terrible happens apparently. And if I knew who owned those dogs wouldn’t you think I would’ve gone and gotten with thier owners first

:woot
It's going to be a pretty day here.

Going to paint the rest of my tomato cages and if the bench dries off I will get that painted too.

The morning walk through shows more things sprouting! Cucumbers are up, cabbage is up, carrots, and beans are trying to pop up.

I am hoping for a good productive day.

I don't know what your state laws are, but here, we have the right to protect ourselves and our property from threats.

There actually was recently a big David in a vote on whether if a dog came into your yard you had the right to shoot it and protect your property. But some people felt that was unfair because the dog isn’t always a threat. I see both sides the neighbors dog has once or twice just kind of wandered into our yard and he’s fine around all of our animals and us and he goes right Back home. It’s not often but as he gets older he just kind of wanders. So I see both sides of the coin. It came after there was an incident where a hunting dog wound up in somebody’s front yard and even though it wasn’t threatening the man he shot him anyway. I believe that got voted down so things are just very weird in this area. It’s almost like you have to wait for the incident to happen before they will get involved. Maybe I’ve just train them well or maybe I just have very good dogs that my dogs under no circumstances even want to leave the property. Even if they’re chasing a squirrel it’s almost like the brakes hit right around our property line and then they’ll just continue to bark

Well just had to leave my poor puppy at the vet do you have the fluids work in her for x-rays. Well she’s not a puppy anymore I just call her that she’s 11. She has separation issues so when she realized I wasn’t going to the back with her they literally had to pick all 50 pounds of her up and carry her with a little bit of whimpering. Guess I’ll work on weeding the garden to take my mind off of it but very impatiently waiting for their call back

Hello all! Had a good Saturday and Sunday with the garden, then we got three inches of rain again yesterday. Dregs of sub-tropical storm Alberto.

I picked the last of the peas and removed the vines. Going to put some more driveway peppers in the space. Also weeded one of the big raised beds that desperately needed it. The watermelon has flowers, the cukes have a couple of itty bitty cukelettes, the bush beans have flowers. The second planting of carrots had a much better germination rate, and I've got several bell peppers and a few 'maters. Cilantro the romaine has all bolted, sigh. The other herbs and driveway plants are doing well. I need to scrounge some more big pots (or shell out for more grow bags). Also to plant some malabar spinach.

Wow, ACO here will definitely take stray dogs and will track em down. That's just about the only thing they'll do. I hope your doggo is OK. :(

So far no 'hog today. I will be mulching a lot today to help the newly transplanted plants fight the heat. Our average high in may is SUPPOSED to be 68, and June is supposed to be 77. It was 90 yesterday and our average for may has been 85*F - we're not supposed to get that hot until June. I suspect we're gonna have some heat problems with the animals this year. :\

Later this week we're supposed to get major thunderstorms across the area. I hope the plants are setting down their roots nice and quick!
