Hay and straw are too pricey here to use it just for compost. I have more than enough brown material with my little almost quarter acre woods. You can buy bales of straw, or ask the feed store for the loose hay that falls off the stacks of bales. Both are good in the compost.
Shavings are cheaper here than hay and straw bales.X 2. I get huge bags from the feed store and use it in the coop, cheaper than shavings. When it gets old I put in the compost, I like it better too.
We are too wet here hay or straw molds so depends on the climate 9 dollars for huge bales
of shavings will stay with that
Do you just save up, crush and work the shells in when you prep?
I have no IDEA WHAT YOU WROTEI once lived in Cottage Grove. 492 bicyclists rusted to death that year.

I’ve always got egg shells at some level going on. I store them in a can on my counter. I crush them down with a wooden spoon. When the can is too full I used the food processor and store that in 1gallon plastic jars in the garage.Do you just save up, crush and work the shells in when you prep?
Well...I’m so over straw. I’ve had to muck and truck smelly wet straw for days. I’ll be doing dirt work in and around my run. Next year I’m trying something different. Cause I’ma’ DONE with strawWe are too wet here hay or straw molds so depends on the climate 9 dollars for huge bales
